0:01 Welcome once again to Words of Life. We turn today to Paul's letter to the Galatians. Now, the main theme of this letter is freedom 0:18 from legalism. Now, in all of Paul's letters, he very often writes words like this. I thank God for you. 0:37 Particularly where he wrote to those churches he had established himself. And even when he writes to churches he had not established like the Colossians. We give thanks to God for you. Whether it's Ephesians or Philippians or 0:55 Thessalonians. Corinthians. He says, "I thank God for you." To the Romans. I thank God for you. But it's very interesting that when he writes to the Galatians, there's not a 1:14 single word like that. The Corinthians were carnal, but he thanked God for something in them. But to the Galatians, not one single 1:35 word of appreciation. Was it because there was nothing good in them? I can't believe that. But Paul was dealing here with a very serious issue. That was a great conflict in the early 1:57 days. Should we bring believers under the law or not? And Paul was the one who once upon a time was a great believer in putting people under the law. But now he's exact opposite of that. 2:22 He says, "Anyone who brings people under the law should be cursed." That's what he says in Galatians. And Paul was so upset that the Galatians had come back under 2:40 the law that he uses words like this. In Galatians verse six, "I'm amazed that you're so quickly deserting him who called you by the grace of Christ to our a different gospel." Chapter three, "You foolish Galatians, 3:06 who has bewitched you?" He calls legalism another gospel. Now, this has been a great conflict throughout the ages. Should we give rules and regulations for 3:27 God's people? In the Old Testament, we know there was not just 10 commandments. If you read Leviticus and Deuteronomy, there are hundreds of commandments. Leviticus is full of rules. 3:46 And they're just complicated rules that no matter how many times you read it, you can't remember them. There were all types of rules. That's why God appointed one tribe totally just to study the rules and explain them. That was their only job. 4:07 To explain the rules in Leviticus and Deuteronomy, etc. But Jesus came and abolished that. He says, "All that is replaced by the Holy Spirit." Moses went up to the mountain and 4:27 brought a law. Jesus went up to heaven and sent the Holy Spirit. And all of us have a choice. You either live under the law or live by led by the Spirit. Paul is very clear when he says 4:47 in Galatians 5:18, "If you're led by the Holy Spirit, you're definitely not going to be under the law." So, it's a choice he puts before them. Don't mix these two. Oil and water, for example. 5:09 Uh water is good for drinking. Oil is good for your scooter or car engine. The oil. The oil. The oil. But if you put oil and water together, then what happens? 5:28 You can't drink it. And you can't pour it in the scooter engine, either. So, you see, it spoils the whole thing. So, that's what happens when you mix law with the Holy Spirit. You got to keep it separate. 5:48 If you want to be under the old covenant, stay there and keep the law. If you want to come under the new covenant, you got to get rid of that and come into the Holy Spirit. That is the way it really is. of godliness. And that is what Paul is fighting for in 6:08 Galatians. He was so disturbed that these people whom he had brought to freedom in Christ had gone back under law. That's why he uses such strong words. He says, 6:28 "You have deserted Christ." Verse six. And he says, "The gospel of Christ has been distorted." Verse seven. And he says, "Even if I come back to you and preach another gospel, I, Paul, 6:49 come back to you and preach another gospel, you must also keep the law. Let God curse me. Supposing an angel from heaven comes and preaches another gospel, let him also be accursed. 7:07 If anyone comes and does not preach the gospel of free grace, he must be accursed." And he says, "Am I trying to please men here or please God? If I try to please men, I cannot be the 7:26 bondservant of Christ." See, many pastors, when they want to keep their church holy, they make all kinds of rules. Otherwise, it would be a bad testimony before others. You can't do this, you can't do that, 7:45 you can't do the other thing. And you must do this, and you must do this, and you must do the other thing. That's how all the laws were in Exodus and Leviticus and Deuteronomy. So, 8:03 they people today feel unless you make some rules like this, people will become worldly. We can't just preach grace. If you preach grace, people will become worldly. Add a few rules to it. Let's add a little water to this oil. 8:26 That's what spoils the whole thing. You got to keep these two things separate. Then Paul says, "See, I want you to know that this gospel that I preached to you is not something I got from some man. I got it by revelation from Christ. 8:46 And I am the person who had who was persecuting these people at one time upon a time and tried to destroy the church of God. But when God revealed his son in me, I did not consult with anybody with 16. I went to Arabia, 9:07 and three years later I went to Jerusalem where he He spent three years in the desert. What was God doing with Paul for three years in the desert? I don't know. But I have an opinion. 9:26 I think God was getting rid of all the chaff that was in Paul's head which he had gotten in his Bible school run by Gamaliel. He said to Paul, "It is as if Paul said you God said to Paul, "You spent three years with that chaff. Now I have to 9:44 spend take you to three years into the desert to get it all out of your system." Get Get out of your system. So that you can understand the wonderful gospel of free grace. What does that mean? 10:06 Salvation is purely through repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Through what Christ died. Through his death and resurrection. It doesn't make a slightest difference 10:25 how bad a sinner you are. If you committed one sin, you come short of the glory of God. If you committed a hundred million sins, you come short of the glory of God. It's like saying a vessel that has got 10:43 one hole or 10,000 holes, water will all leak out. You cannot hold it. Sin is like that. God says there's no difference. All have sinned. And 11:01 it's you don't get to heaven by being good. That's a heathen teaching. On the final day, God will take a balance. Put all your good deeds one side. Bad deeds the other side. See which is heavier. 11:19 That's a human idea. Every religion basically teaches that. If you're good, God will take you to heaven. That's the mark of all false religions. Jesus said, you cannot be good. You know you're saying you're going to 11:39 be good. Everything you do is tainted by selfishness and pride. But underneath it, there's some selfishness or pride that spoils the whole thing. Infectious leprosy in his hand. 12:04 He can give you an apple, beautiful apple. You won't take it. Apple is beautiful. The hand giving it is full of infection. He gives you a beautiful orange, you won't take it. Anything good put into that hand 12:24 immediately gets spoiled. That is how man's heart is. As soon as he does something good, it's spoiled immediately. God cannot accept it. Only Christianity teaches that. And so he says it doesn't make a 12:43 difference whether you got one AIDS germ or 10,000 AIDS germ, you got the disease. A germ of the disease of AIDS. Whether you got one You got the disease. 13:03 You can't glory over the other fellow when both have got the same disease. God has made his way of salvation where he says, I freely forgive everybody. You have to acknowledge your sin. 13:21 Receive Christ who died for your sin. And there you can't add works to that. You can say that is like saying that Jesus didn't finish the work on the cross. No, that's not enough. In addition to that, you must be 13:41 circumcised. In addition to that, you must be baptized. In addition to that, you must keep the Sabbath. And in addition to that, you got to do this, that, or the other. Then salvation is by grace plus works. That's another gospel. 14:03 And anyone who preaches that must be cursed. He may be a good man. He may be a sincere man. He deserves to be cursed according to Galatians 1:8. He repeats it. The Holy Spirit through Paul. 14:22 He says, I didn't say that accidentally. What did he say? I'm saying it again. Anyone preaching that type of message must be cursed. In chapter two, he says how he went up to 14:40 Jerusalem. And um God asked him to go there. And then I met with those who were the leaders of the church there. That is James and Peter and John, verse nine. This James was the brother of Jesus. 15:04 Not the apostle. The apostle was killed many years earlier. And they gave me and Barnabas, verse nine, the right hand of fellowship. And then he says, 15:22 Here he gives an example of how he fought for the truth of the gospel. He said, I'll give you an example how I fight even against the greatest apostles for preserving this free gospel. When Peter came to Antioch, 15:42 he says, I opposed him to his face. Now, if you if two apostles have some disagreement and fight with each other, should they go and tell that to these weak Galatian believers? Some elders are upset with that. 16:04 They said, "Brother, if you disagree with us, why you have to tell the whole church about it?" Here's the Holy Spirit inspiring Paul to tell this to the Galatians. Why do we have to hide all these things? 16:22 Elders are not some gods or something. They're ordinary human beings, and Peter is also an ordinary human being. So when they do something wrong, it's good to make it public so that others also don't do it. There's a lot of honor seeking among 16:40 Christians. I do you general You're seeking your own honor. Forget it. Seek the glory of God. So he openly talks about Peter. He says, "I'll tell you what happened." 16:58 Peter was he happily eating with all the Gentiles and Jews. Food along with the others. Somebody came from Jerusalem. Certain men who came from James, the leader there. He was a little more legalistic. And 17:20 as soon as they came, our one day one day Peter stopped eating with the Gentiles. Chapter two, verse 12. Because he was afraid of these legalists. And the rest of the Jews also stopped eating with the Gentiles. 17:38 And even Barnabas stopped eating. Who was the only one left who stood up for the truth? Paul says, "Me." And in the presence of everybody, he rebukes Peter. And remember that Paul came to faith 10 17:57 years after Peter. He's a junior apostle. And he stands before the senior apostle, 10 years senior to him. And he says, "If you are a Jew, and you live like the 18:16 Gentiles eating with them, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like the Jews?" He says, "According to the Old Testament, we are Jews and not sinners like the Gentiles. But now in Christ, we have understood 18:35 the gospel. That nobody can be justified, verse 16, by the works of the law. We are justified only through faith in Christ. Not by the works of the law. Now he says, 18:55 "While we are trying to be justified by Christ, we ourselves are found as sinners. What does that prove? Does it mean Christ approves of what we are doing? Not at all. And he says, "If I start building again this law that I've destroyed once, verse 19:12 18, then I'm a sinner. I'm a party. Christ doesn't approve of it, verse 17. Now he says, "I'll tell you what actually happened." Christ died. I died with him. 19:31 Verse 19. So the Lord has not hold me. I died to that old relationship with the law. He said, "I've been crucified. I put it on Christ who's living in me. And now I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for 19:50 me. If righteousness comes through the law, then it's an absolute waste of time that Christ died on the cross. That is canceling the grace of God. 20:07 This is such a serious thing. That That is why Paul speaks so strongly to these people. He really wants them to know how upset he is with them. There is no word of appreciation. The Corinthians 20:29 whose lives were much worse than these Galatians. He appreciates things there. You would think that if the Galatians' lives are much better, even though they're legalistic, their lives are much better. The Corinthians are carnal. 20:50 Galatia, nobody was living with his father's wife. How can you appreciate those Corinthians and not appreciate these Galatians? You have to learn something here. That a man who lives under the law 21:08 preaches the law and works is worse than somebody sleeping with his father's wife. I don't think many people understand that. There are so many Christians today who are legalistic. You can't do this, you can't do that, 21:27 you can't do the other thing. But this isn't salvation by faith in Christ. Yeah, that's true. But in addition, you can't do this, you can't do this, you can't do that. You must do this, you must do this, and you must do that. 21:43 Such a man is accursed. It doesn't matter if he's the greatest preacher in the world, he's accursed. Because faith uh salvation is not by works, but by faith. He says, "How do you expect a dead man 22:01 to keep the law?" So, you can't go to a dead man here and tell him, "Listen, don't worship idols. Don't commit adultery." You're telling him all these things to a dead man. He hasn't understood the gospel. You haven't understood it, you 22:21 Galatians. In the gospel, I die with Christ. And it's foolish to tell a dead man to keep the law. You fellows want to keep the law because half of you are not probably converted. You haven't come to a real experience of 22:44 the new birth. And to solve that problem, under the law so that at least your church will look a little decent. Otherwise, there'll be so much immorality and evil in your church. That's why Paul spoke so strongly. 23:06 You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you? Chapter 3, verse Let me ask you something. You remember years ago when you received the Holy Spirit? Verse two. Is it because you kept so many works of the law, God says, "Well, I'll give you 23:22 the spirit"? No, it's by faith. And what about all the miracles that you have experienced? Verse five. That's also by faith. Not by your works. Think of Abraham. He was also justified 23:41 by faith. And God told Abraham that all the people in the world would be blessed through him. Paul says, "If you fellows want to be under the law, 23:59 there is a curse, verse 10, on everyone who cannot keep everything under the law." That's written in Deuteronomy 27. So, even in the Old Testament, he says, it says the righteous will live by faith. And he says, "There's a big difference. 24:21 The law and faith are two different things." Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, verse 13. You can't keep the law because you're not able to keep the whole thing. I'm freed from that. 24:40 Because Jesus became a curse for me on the tree. I get the blessing of Abraham through the Holy Spirit. That's what it says here in verse 14. So, this is the gospel. It's not Christ died for you and then you keep 24:58 some rules. I open my life and come as I am, and Christ forgives me. We need to speak, preach that, and emphasize that in our time. God bless you. 25:19 Welcome once again to Words of Life. In our study through the Bible, we have reached Paul's letter to the Galatians. And we saw that here, the great controversy is, should a Christian 25:37 be brought back under the law? The conflict between law and grace has waged throughout 20 centuries of Christianity. We have worldly Christians who allow 25:57 people to sin. That's one extreme. And then Christians have got this disease called pendulumitis, where they swing to the other extreme. Like the pendulum of a clock. It goes to the other end. 26:17 They say, "No, no, we can't let people be free. We have to give them rules. You got to do this, you got to do that, and you got to do the other thing." And actually, looking at the outside, these people with rules look much holier 26:32 than these other worldly people. People with rules have got very modest dresses. These people may be a little more slack in their dressing. And then these people with rules and all 26:52 may not have any television in their home. They may not even have an internet connection. These people may have both. And these people may have go and watch cricket games. These people don't watch any cricket. 27:11 They are always reading the Bible here. These people may go for a game of football sometimes. And these people have a lot of fasting and prayer. These people fast and pray, but they also have some peace also. And an outsider looking at this 27:32 say, "These are really the holy people." You get a lot of honor when you keep the law. But you know, you'll get a surprise. You may find that God accepts these people more because of one reason. Not because they got television and play 27:50 cricket and football and all that. No, definitely not. But because of one reason. That these people and these are so proud of their standard. 28:10 And their attitude, even though they don't say it. Lord, I thank you that I'm not like those people there. And these people, what have they got to boast about? They say, "We can only boast that Christ 28:27 died for us and our sins are forgiven." And you may find God is more accepting of those people. That doesn't appear like that in the eyes of men. That's why Paul says in Galatians 1:10, "If I try to please men, I can't be a 28:45 servant of Christ." You cannot be a servant of Christ if you try to please men. That could have got him. You do all this to show men how holy you are. And it's all external. 29:05 The dress and style and covering the head and Now, what do you think is more uh acceptable to God? Compare to sisters. This sister with a very modest dress. 29:24 No part of her body exposed. A way more case that I need to get her. And no ornaments. Very simple clothes. And always covers her head. And is frequently in prayer and fasting. 29:44 Goes to all the meetings. And is very proud of her holiness. Looks down on all these other people who are not like her. Won't have any fellowship with them. She considers herself herself one of the 30:02 holiest people on earth. Gossips and backbites against all types of other Christians. And says that her group alone is holy. Here's another group. In here where there are group group members. Sister who's probably cut her hair 30:19 short. Got lipstick and ornaments. Watches the news on television. And is not praying and fasting like these people all the time. She does it now and then. 30:42 She's humble. She doesn't ever think I'm better than anybody else. And she does not speak evil about anybody. If somebody speaks evil, she says, "No, I don't want to say anything." Now, who do you think is more acceptable 31:00 to God? Your answer to that question will reveal the condition of your heart. Whether you're a legalist yourself. I would rather have a hundred sisters like this than one sister like 31:20 this. Who have got an inward holiness. And not an outward holiness like these people. That is legalism. If you look around in Christendom at different groups, you find so many 31:38 people with this external holiness. They are the Pharisees of today. The Galatians were like that. You know, Paul speaks to them. He says, "Do you know Abraham had two sons?" 32:01 Before that, he talks about the law and grace like this. People were children. Now we are adult sons. That's what he says here. Children, verse 24. You needed a governess or an ayah to 32:22 look after you. Go and come to me or ayah or whatever. And that is what the law was. Because you're a little baby. Verse 26, you've become sons, adult sons. You're 20 years old now. Do you still need an ayah? 32:42 To help you to cross the street? You don't need the law, he says. Because now we can have the Holy Spirit. Verse 14, the blessing of Abraham has come on us that we can receive the Holy Spirit. If you don't have the Holy Spirit, 33:05 then you sure need the ayah even if you're 50 years old. But then you're a baby. Like a 50-year-old who needs an ayah to help you cross the street. And the main fear people have is if you 33:24 remove the law from people, their life will become worse. I'll tell you, my life was much worse when I was under the law. Not in external sins. Looked very holy on the outside when I 33:44 was a legalist. Strict against this sin, that sin, the other sin. But my my life was filled with spiritual pride that I looked down on other people. That spoiled everything. 34:05 So I wasn't really holy. You know, you can make a beautiful chicken curry. And put one dead lizard inside it. Who will want to eat them? That's what happens when you live under the law. And then this one dead lizard of 34:26 spiritual pride. You know that that's a dead lizard. And if you've got the slightest bit of pride in you, even a small lizard, you don't want to eat that curry. God won't accept it. God won't accept it. 34:47 And here's another person. I might look at him and say, "His curry is not so good as mine." But God says, "I'd rather eat that because there's no dead lizard inside that." That's how bad spiritual pride is. Legalists are spiritually proud. 35:11 They're babies. God has come to deliver us from that. He has sent the son, chapter 4, verse 4. Then verse 6, he sent the Holy Spirit. He could come into us and say, "Daddy" to God in heaven. He says, a child." 35:36 When you were a child, you were just like a slave. Verse 1. Because you can say you own everything, but you're not like a slave because you can't inherit anything. But now he says you're not a slave. You're a son. 35:54 And so this is the difference between those who are under law and those who are under grace. Those who are under law are like babies and slaves. Those who have come under grace are grown-up sons. He says, "Now you've come to know God 36:13 through the Holy Spirit." Verse 9, why do you want to go back to all those rules and regulations? You feel you must observe this, that, and the other. You must observe the Sabbath day like some people say in order to be holy. 36:32 And then he says, "Let me give you an example of Abraham." He had two sons. You know that. The first son was by a bondwoman, verse 22. She was a slave, Hagar. But the other son 36:52 was from the free woman, Sarah. And he says, "These two sons are a picture, verse 24, of two covenants. One comes from Sinai. That is 37:09 producing slaves." Hagar is a picture of that. And Sarah is a picture of the other. Free. She's not a slave. And both of them had children. A world of difference between Ishmael and Isaac. And he says, "Hagar is just like this 37:31 Mount Sinai in Arabia. Like the earthly Jerusalem in bondage. But we belong to a heavenly Jerusalem. And now we are not under this law." Verse 26. "We are not under this law." 37:50 And he quotes a verse from Isaiah 54. Yes, Isaiah 54. And so he says to the Galatians, "You brethren, verse 28, are like Isaac, children of promise." The person born of the flesh, Ishmael, 38:09 persecutes the one born of the spirit. It's happening today. Legalists look down on these other people. What does scripture say? You think God would say, "Cast away all these people and bring all these holy people to heaven." 38:31 You are not holy, they are legalists. They have a dead lizard of spiritual pride in every curry they make. What does God "Cast out this bondwoman and her son. She's not going to have a share in the son of promise." So he says, 38:54 "We are not part of this bondage system." We are from the free system. Now this is a very important thing for us to bear in mind. You know the reason why people don't talk about this much. They're afraid that if you preach grace 39:16 freely, everybody will take advantage and live in sin. That happened in the first century. It's happened in all 21 centuries. There will always be people who take advantage of God's law and live as they like. So a lot of preachers use their human 39:41 wisdom. We got to make some rules. Otherwise we'll all become worldly. What they mean by worldly is dress and music and things like that. They don't realize that this big fat 40:00 lizard of spiritual pride is spoiling everything in their life. They don't realize this. And this is a conflict that we face today also. Shall I call it the law of the spirit? Let's really find out. 40:24 If you follow the spirit is your life standard going to be less than under the law? I have certainly not found that to be true. I find the standard is higher. But in addition to being higher, you're also humble. You don't despise anybody 40:44 else. These people, their standard is lower, but they also despise others. Of course, there are some people, as I said, who take advantage of the grace of God and just live in sin. You know what God says? 41:05 Let them live in sin. Those are the people who take advantage of my grace. They're destined for hell. They'll go to hell. There will be people in our churches who will go to hell because they take advantage of this message of grace. 41:24 What shall we say? Let them go to hell. If they take advantage of God's grace and play the fool with God they We don't have to change the gospel and bring laws in just for the sake of those people who are taking advantage of God's 41:41 grace. Who in any case are the people who take advantage of God's grace? Who are these people? These are the most carnal, worldly, and 41:59 very often unconverted people. And imagine how foolish it is to change the whole gospel just for the sake of these people. See, Jesus, whenever he spoke to the 12 disciples there was always one devil sitting 42:18 there. Judas Iscariot. But did Jesus always change his message to preach to the one carnal person there? Today some preachers are like that. They see somebody sitting in the church 42:37 who's not obeying God's word, and the whole message is preached to that person. They are inspired by the devil. Paul says the devil the devil says Oh, here this man of God has come to preach a message in this church. Oh, I can make him change the message. 43:00 I'll just send one or two people who are a bit different. And as soon as he sees them, he will start preaching to them. He'll forget all about what God wants to say to the other 200 people. He preaches to these two people. 43:22 This is happening all over the world. Because these people say we got to bring people under rules. Ignore them. There will always be people in your church who are not serious about following Jesus. Let them go. 43:46 Let them go to hell. But to the rest who are seeking God, preach the true gospel. They don't have to live under the law. Chapter 5, verse 1, Christ has purchased freedom for us. Don't get into slavery again. 44:08 Anyone who says you got to do this, you got to do this to be accepted by God Once you start on that, you got to keep the whole law. And then verse 4, you're cut off from Christ. So he says 44:29 in Christ there is a freedom. Of course, I want to warn you, verse 13, don't use that freedom for the opportunity of the flesh. Walk according to the spirit, verse 16. Not according to the law. 44:49 If you walk in the spirit, you will not fulfill the desires of the flesh. Your life will be holy. What sort of fruit will come in your First of all, what will be eliminated from your life? Immorality, verse 19, impurity, 45:06 sensuality, idolatry, all get out of your life. Verse 20, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger will all go from your life. When you walk in the spirit and they'll be replaced by 45:25 verse 22 love, joy, peace, patience, and so on. You don't have to be under the law when you're led by the spirit. And so he says Dear brothers don't be proud. If you see somebody has fallen 45:44 don't look down on him. But seek in chapter 6, verse 1, to restore him. And recognize that you also could have fallen like him. Bear that burden. And don't think you are so spiritual and you're somebody, verse 3. You are deceiving yourself. 46:09 And then he goes on to say Don't be deceived with all this. Whatever a man sows, he's going to reap, verse 7. If you sow to the flesh, you'll reap corruption. And pride is the worst thing you can 46:28 have. And so he says his own testimony. He says, "This is how I got free from the law. I can boast in nothing, verse 14, except that Jesus died for me. On that cross 46:53 Now the world doesn't have any attraction for me. All its rules and regulations and all don't have any power over me now. I have died to that. And the world is dead to me. How does God deliver us from the world? 47:13 You know, Galatians begins with this phrase in chapter 1. Verse 4. Christ died not only for our sins but to deliver us from this evil world. It will be like this. Chapter 6, verse 47:31 14, I have died to the world and the world is dead to me. And yet we said that the main theme of Galatians is legalism. Do you understand? See the connection there between legalism and worldliness? A legalistic person does not look 47:55 worldly at all on the outside. His modest dress and disciplined life make him look so holy. side, you find he's more worldly than these other people. Because he's proud. 48:19 The primary characteristic of worldly people is they are proud. And legalism got that in plenty. How to be delivered? Twice, three times Paul says about being crucified. Chapter 2, verse 20. 48:40 I'm crucified with Christ. Chapter 5, verse 24. If you belong to Christ, you have crucified the flesh with its lust. Chapter 6, verse 14. The world is crucified to me. I am crucified to the world. 49:00 The meaning is the world has got now as much interest in me as it has in a dead man. It's like I'm dead to the world. And the world is also dead to me. The world now has got as much attraction 49:17 for me as it has for a dead man. So the way to escape is by dying. The way to escape legalism is by dying to the law. The only the world is by dying to the 49:37 world. So Paul explains that wonderfully here about being crucified with Christ. So this is a very important book. I believe it's a very relevant book for the time in which we live. Let me give you one simple guideline in 49:58 closing. When you discipline yourself in some area, that's good. Say you want to get up every morning 6:00, spend half an hour with the Bible. The moment you impose that rule on 50:16 others, you're a legalist. You always want to wear white clothes, go ahead.
