0:00 prayer. Heavenly Father, we just want to hear from you, Lord. We want you to uh continue to teach us from from your heart um your word. Lord, we we need to we need to hear your voice. So, we just ask you to speak to us this morning. We 0:17 love you. Praise you. Thank you so much for everything you've already revealed um through one another in Jesus name. Amen. All right. All right. So, we've been talking about money for the last uh few times that 0:36 we've shared. So, this is actually the fifth uh in a series. I'd originally intended to only have about two or three of those, but I just really felt like it was important to keep looking at some of these scriptures and principles. And you 0:48 know one of the things in in in studying uh money for many years I I realized like if people understand the principles uh then they'll you know the the dollars and cents part of it really becomes very clear and easy. But um you know even 1:02 understanding the dollars and cents if you don't understand the heart and the principle behind you know what God's trying to to reveal to us then then you miss kind of everything. So um just to recap so we started out the first 1:15 message was on silos. We said that money is kind of you know according to scripture if I let scripture define what money is rather than what my own understanding or what I've been taught by the world then I recognize that I 1:27 can't consume everything that I work for uh all the grain or uh everything I've been paid. So I I store it and that's what money allows me to do. And it can take any shape and form but it's a way of storing money for a later time. And 1:40 so just recognizing that that's what scripture teaches. You know, I have a better understanding of money already. And then we talked a little bit about giving. And we looked at the verse that says um you know not to uh let your left 1:53 hand know what your right hand is doing. And we considered that that can be both an internal thing where when we give we don't we're not keeping records. Our left hand is not writing down everything that the right hand does. In fact, we 2:05 see scriptures where uh in eternity we're surprised we had forgotten uh some of the giving and we look forward to that. And then also too just externally, you know, we want to keep it in secret, you know, that we don't know that the 2:17 person receiving the gift may not even know who the giver was and can only give glory to God. So we looked at giving. Um then the third one we talked about debt and particularly that rare message that's not often taught uh from Romans 2:30 13:8 that says we're to owe no man anything uh but to love them. And so taking that seriously and not allowing oursel who have been set free to be put into the bondage of debt. And then uh the last time we talked about discipline 2:44 and we saw that uh you know one of the evidences of the fruit of the spirit in our life is actually self-control in the area of money and that as we you know we're continually seeking for the holy spirit uh one of the evidences will be 2:57 that we suddenly become more disciplined in our spending and more careful. So we we want to continue to seek for that and continue to allow the the holy spirit to reveal uh reveal these things in the area of money. So this morning we're 3:10 going to focus on uh the fifth area. Um oh before we do that I I said it's interesting these two verses. I said every time that I I do this I want to at least mention these two verses. And so just from the reference I think most of 3:23 us are probably figuring out what the what the verse is, right? Matthew 6:24 says basically we get we get a choice. We we get to pick our master. We can either let it be money which I think most people in the earth pick or we can 3:37 choose God. But we cannot do both. And we're going to look a little more at this verse later on. And then Luke 16:11, which tells us that basically the test of whether the Lord can entrust true riches to us is is how we handle 3:51 money. And so we want to uh you know continue to grow in that and take that seriously. So uh we're also going to interestingly look at both of these verses later on as we look at the as we look at this topic. So we're going to 4:02 look at possessions. And I think all of us uh you know have been tempted in this area of possessions and and uh you know our things and our money and our stuff and everything that surrounds us. You know there's a temptation to hold on to 4:15 it very tightly. So we want to look at uh what scripture says about that. So the passage I want to look at I want to start with just a verse that uh from Luke 14 uh and verse 33. And if you've never if you've never looked at this I want you to to spend 4:32 some time just considering this verse. So the verse says, "So then none of you can be my disciple who does not give up all his own possessions." And if you if you look in Luke 14 when it talks about disciplehip or those that want to be 4:49 disciples, there's actually three um three conditions. You know, the first one in in verse 26 is that a man must hate his father, mother, sister, brother, wife, kids, even his own life. like compared to the love of Christ all 5:04 those things you know look like hate and again we look at Jesus as our example to interpret that [clears throat] and that's the first you know condition of disciples disciplehip the second one is that we're willing to take up our cross 5:18 every day and follow Jesus that's the second one and this is the third one if somebody wants to be a disciple of Jesus they have to give up everything they possess and it's one of those verses that honestly I used to just kind of 5:31 read past You know, whenever we see a verse in in scripture that seems to be such a high standard, you there's two options. We can either say, um, oh, well, it's really not that high a standard. You know, nobody does it. 5:44 Nobody follows it. And that's what I that's what I kind of experienced. You know, I read this and just go, well, I look around me and maybe there's like a, you know, a few fringe cultlike people who try to follow this and it never 5:56 seems to go well. or maybe some missionary back in the 1800s tried to do it that I read of or but nobody around me nobody really takes this seriously so it must not mean what I think it says on the surface but the best thing to do 6:09 with these scriptures is when we see them if if it has a high standard to just be honest about that gap Lord you say this is the standard but but I'm only here and so how do how do we close that gap and so taking this seriously 6:24 and saying Lord what does it what does it mean to give up all my possessions. And the devil would love for us to to kind of ignore these verses and not take them seriously. Um, and to also think that they're very uh very heavy, you 6:37 know, like the Lord is asking us to do something very difficult uh in giving up all our possessions. Like you don't want to do that, you know, just call yourself a believer. Don't consider yourself a disciple. You know, the devil would love 6:49 to kind of distinguish two categories. like you can uh you can get something from Jesus without actually having to count the cost and surrender everything, but that's not what the scripture teaches. So, um you know, we're called 7:01 to make disciples and be disciples and and it says very clearly here that, you know, if I'm going to be a disciple, I have to give everything up. And so, we want to look at that. And so, there's a passage I'd like to read and focus on. 7:14 Before I do that, I want to point out this verse. So, in 1 Corinthians 10:26, it makes a statement. It says, "For the earth is the Lord's and all it contains." And the disciple has simply said, "Amen" to this verse. The disciple 7:29 says, "You know what? It's true." And and I can look at the stars and the and the sun and the earth and and I can say, "Yep, it all belongs to the Lord." But I can even take a more um you know more close look and I can look around my home 7:44 and I can look in my garage and I can look at uh you know everything everything much closer to me and say even that's true like everything that you know I've given been given a responsibility for it actually belongs to the Lord. And so that's all a 7:59 disciple has done is agreed with this verse. But the passage I want to look at is this. And if you have your Bibles, I know I put a lot of verses up on the screen, but if you have your Bibles, I would encourage you to turn uh to Luke 8:11 16 and and we're going to read it together. So, I'll read it. And if you guys can follow along in your Bible, I think it would be beneficial to see it in your scriptures. So, Luke 16, I'll start at verse one. It says, "Now, he was also saying to the 8:28 disciples, and that's one of the things that I want you to see is that it says he was talking to his disciples in verse one." If you go back to chapter 15, you'll find that the passage leading up to this point was he was speaking to the 8:41 Pharisees and to the crowd. And if you go forward in chapter 16 and you get to verse 14, you see that he's talking again to the Pharisees. But for these 13 verses, he's talking to the disciples. And he says, "There was a m there was a 8:55 rich man who had a manager. And this manager was reported to him as squandering his possessions. And he called him and said to him, "What is this I hear about you? Give an accounting of your management, for you can no longer be manager." The manager 9:12 said to himself,"What shall I do since my master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig and I'm ashamed to beg. I know I know what I shall do so that when I am removed from the management, people will 9:28 welcome me into their homes." And he summoned each one of his master's debtors. And he began saying to the first, "How much do you owe my master?" And he said, "100 measures of oil." And he said to him, "Take your bill and sit 9:42 down quickly and write 50." Then he said to another, "And how much do you owe?" And he said, "1000 measures a week." And he said to him, "Take your bill and write 80." And his master praised the unrighteous manager because he had acted 9:57 shrewdly. For sons of this age are more shrewd in relation to their own kind than the sons of light. And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by means of the wealth of unrighteousness, so that when it fails, they will receive 10:12 you into the eternal dwellings. He who is faithful in very little thing is faithful also in much. And he who is unrighteous in a very little thing is unrighteous also in much. Therefore, if you have not been faithful in the use of 10:26 unrighteous wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you? And if you have not been faithful in the use of that which is anothers, who will give you that which is your own? No servant can t serve two masters, for he will either 10:40 hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and wealth. And it's a very interesting passage. And one interpretation that you know I've heard people ask me about this like what does 10:54 that mean? It's kind of a a strange thing where you see Jesus praising what what appears on the surface to be unrighteousness. And Jesus isn't doing that. He's what he's pointing out. He's not saying that we should uh be shady in 11:07 our dealings and that it's a you know an injustifies a means. What he's saying is like the the world operates under this system very wisely and very shrewdly. Um you know in business you know people have figured out how to you know 11:21 accomplish objectives they want. And he's pray, you know, he's praising uh kind of the wisdom, the worldly wisdom and comparing that to uh, you know, how much more uh how much more, you know, wise, you know, those of the sons of 11:34 life should be. And so it's it's interesting. It's a very interesting passage and very challenging. What I love about it, if we look at the if we look at verse 9, it tells us exactly what it means. And I'm very thankful to 11:48 live in an age where I have the Bible where where somebody like Luke had took down took pains to record, you know, not just the parable itself, but Jesus telling telling us exactly what it means. And in verse 9, he says, "This is 12:02 what I'm saying. I'm telling you to make friends for yourself by by money. Use your money to make friends for yourself." And and it says when it fails and this is something too like understanding I I want to look at money 12:17 knowing it will fail because that's exactly what scripture says. I don't want to put any confidence any hope in it because it's going to fail. And Jesus is saying hey use that money that you've been given to make friends for yourself. 12:32 Uh to to compare it to another scripture if if you see somebody that is thirsty buy them some water. If you see somebody hungry, buy them some food. If you see somebody that doesn't have clothing, buy them some clothing. 12:44 And it says that they will receive you into the eternal dwellings. What's interesting about this, you know, we're commanded as Christians to set our mind not on things of earth, but on things above. And there's kind of a connection 12:57 here when Jesus is explaining this parable to us. He's saying, "What I want you to do is use your earthly money, the things of earth, and I want to connect that to things of eternity, to things of uh uh, you know, in the eternal realm." 13:12 In other words, like what you do here will be remembered there. And that's the example that we see in those other scriptures of where people remembered that we fed them or gave them a cool cup of water. And so, it connects things for 13:24 us. And we want to see that. And it's wonderful that the Lord does that, that we have an opportunity to do things here that that are going to be remembered and and impacted in in eternity. And one of the things that's interesting about this 13:36 passage, so you say, "Okay, uh, I get it now. I'm supposed to use my money um to, you know, to make friends for myself. I'm supposed to, you know, spend my money to to help others." But what's interesting about the passage, I noticed 13:49 it gave two examples. It used, you know, it says, "If you owe a hundred, then make it 50." And then another person I think owed a 100 but but but he said take and write down 80. And what I see from that is like we really need wisdom 14:02 to do this. You know in the earth you know in earth you can use human wisdom to kind of accomplish things but when it comes to things of eternity we really need the spirit of Christ to reveal to us that wisdom that's from above. Like 14:15 in every case in one case you notice it was half. In the other case they only reduced the debt by 20%. Well so how do you know? In other words, it would be real simple sometimes if like the rich young ruler, we could just sell 14:28 everything, just give it to the first poor person we saw and then go follow Jesus. But most of us are not called to that. In fact, only one person in scripture was called to that kind of uh, you know, giving up of everything. The 14:41 rest of us are called to this where we need wisdom to say, "Okay, Lord, I know I'm supposed to help those around me. There's plenty of needs. help me to know where to reduce the to to lighten somebody's load 20% and where I lighten 14:55 another load 50%. So, we need wisdom to do this and we just see that, you know, we want to learn and God is very merciful and very patient. At least he has been with me. I've made many mistakes in this area, but I see that he's wanting to teach me. 15:08 He's wanting to reveal things of eternal value to me through money here on this earth. And he wants me to have the the joy of discovering that it's more blessed to give than to receive. And that there's a special relationship I 15:22 can form with him when I'm able to to help somebody or lighten somebody's load or reduce somebody's debt just a little bit. And the only person that knows is him. There's a fellowship that occurs there and it's wonderful. The other 15:35 verse I want to point out in the scripture, there's a lot in the scripture, but there's a few things that I wanted to point out is this verse. And this again, this is the verse that we said we would look at every time that we 15:43 look at money. And it's verse 11. And it's talking about faith. And it's, you know, and it's challenging us, you know, to be faithful in the use of unrighteous wealth or money, you know. And I I put a dog here because dogs are typically 15:58 known as the the faithful animal. I figure kids would enjoy looking at a dog with its tongue hanging out. But you know another verse uh for kids and adults is Jesus you know later in Luke 18 Jesus asked a question like when the 16:12 son of man returns will he even find faith on the earth and if I put these together when Jesus comes back will he even find people who are trying to be faithful with their money in a way that pleases him are they even trying you 16:29 know is will he even find a measure of faith and so if you connect that too I mean there's a lot of things that that you know will will the son of man find faith. But you know, this is another aspect of it. When when Jesus returns, 16:39 will he find Josh, I'll use myself. Will will he find Josh trying to be faithful with the money that he has? Or will he find Josh just burying his, you know, the gifts the Lord has given him into the ground, which is symbolic of just 16:53 using it in in selfishness, using it for me when he returns? Which one is Jesus going to find? you know, and if he's going to reward me with something truly valuable in this age or the one to come, it's going to be tested in this. And 17:07 I've shared this before. You know, when I look at truly godly men and the ones that the Lord seems to have blessed and anointed, there is every time a connection with this, I find out that they were very faithful in money. A lot 17:19 of the missionaries we read today, like Hudson Taylor and William Kerry, tremendously faithful with money. Zack Punan who visited us uh a couple weeks ago very faithful in money and that's why we're so blessed by his teaching. 17:32 There's a connection to that. There's a there's it's a it's a it's an expression of faith and the Lord sees it and rewards it. So we want to take this seriously. And then finally the last verse is Luke uh 16:13. The last one I want to 17:48 talk about again these are this passage this whole passage is good to meditate on. But I I found this picture of of a a hold or a hug. And if I if I look at the King James version, I like the way that it expresses it. You know, it's talking 18:01 about having two masters, hating one, loving the other. And then it goes into another expression of it. It says you'll you'll hold on to one of them, but you'll despise or or think very little of the other one. Like, you know, and I 18:15 just think of this uh you know, what what do we hold on to? Like what do we grip? you know, these um you know, these two are you know, there you can kind of see in the one one's face like there's a pouring out of love as he as he wraps 18:29 his arm around one of them. And so the question is, you know, between these two, which one of which one of it is are my arms wrapped around and that I'm clinging to and embracing in in a loving way? Is it God or money? And I, you 18:44 know, I want to be honest in this. I want to examine myself now. I don't want to wait till eternity and discover that, you know, I I thought I loved God, but I was really holding on or embracing uh money like this. And it's interesting 18:58 that, you know, those two verses that I talked about in, you know, uh the account I always gave was in Matthew, but it's actually also written in Luke 11, too. So, you find these two verses that were kind of the burden of my heart 19:09 in talking about money that I said I would share every time. They're actually like uh you know there's only one verse that separates the two of them and there's a close connection to that. And so just being honest with ourselves, 19:20 brothers and sisters, the Lord loves honesty. You know the thief in the cross wound up in paradise. The thief next to Jesus wound up in paradise because of his honesty. And it's good whenever we allow the Lord to search us. And he'll 19:33 do it through, you know, through different scenarios and different things in our life to test and say, you know, just like he did with with Abraham when he said, you know, will are you willing to put Isaac on the altar and love me. 19:44 The Lord will allow these things to come into our life to test like where is your embrace, Josh? And it's good for us. It's a good test. So, we want to take these things seriously. You know, another thing I was thinking about, I 19:56 want to go back to this verse. you know, just that condition of disciplehip, you know, in light of, you know, what we've been discussing today. You know, again, Satan wants you to look at this verse and either just quickly 20:11 disregard it, you know, pretend it's not even in your Bible, um, or pretend that you're already doing it, you know, where you do it nominally. You say, "Oh, yeah, yeah, I absolutely agree, you know, that everything belongs to the Lord. 20:23 Everything is his." But in in practice, it's really not true. Um, but I think you know the Lord wants us to, you know, to be free. And so this picture here is of a hand. And notice it's an open hand. And this is the way I want to view 20:40 everything in my life. Everything I have that's not him. I want to have it in an open hand. The Lord has given uh things for me to use on this earth. But I want to have my hand completely open uh acknowledging that it's his. And if he 20:55 ever wants to take it out of my hand, that's fine. That's that's perfectly okay with me because I acknowledge that it's it's his. And he will he he already has in my life allowed different tests to come and see if that was really my 21:09 attitude. And some of them I failed. And I had to go back to the Lord and say, ' And Lord, I said that I would give you everything and that I wouldn't have any possessions, but I found my fingers wrapping around that thing that I'd 21:22 worked so hard for or or that I thought was belong to me. I'm sorry. I'm going to open my hand back up and keep it open and have everything before you. And he'll allow certain little things. He'll allow little things and big things. and 21:35 he'll say, "Is your palm open with everything that I've entrusted to you, your talents, your uh your resources, your opportunities? Do you keep everything that open before me?" And the Lord wants to do that. There's a quote 21:51 in the world, in the world, they they say this, I tried to look up who actually said it, but there's a quote uh that many people have said, one variation or the other. They said, "The more things you own, the more they own 22:03 you." And I believe this is absolutely true. You know, I would use the word possess. You know, just because uh like I have a car in my name, but I don't possess it that that belongs to the Lord. Everything I have belongs to him. 22:16 And so the more things that I possess, the more they have control over me. And so that verse, and Satan doesn't want you to hear this, but what Jesus wants you to hear is I'm not trying to weigh you down with a commandment when I tell 22:30 you to give up all your possessions. I'm trying to set you free. I don't want things to own you. I want you to be free. But you're so obsessed with your car or whatever it is that you won't you're so focused on it. You got 22:47 your arms wrapped so so tightly around that. I'm trying to peel it away so that you'll grab on to me and you'll hold on to me. That's what Jesus wants to do. That's why he makes that commandment to his disciples and says, "Listen guys, I 23:06 don't want you to possess anything on this earth. The only thing that I want you to grab tightly to is me." And this is highlighted in the Old Testament whenever Jacob comes to a place in his life where he finally after wrestling 23:21 with God, you guys know the story, I think it's in Genesis 32, where he grabs tightly onto God and says, "I will not let you go till you bless me." He had finally come to that place where he grabs onto him and holds tight. And so 23:35 the Lord in all his love will will will let us go through each of these possessions and he'll say, "Are you willing to let go of it and cling on to me?" And those of us that have discovered like, "Wow, Jesus is worth holding on 23:49 to. That's all I really need." And sometimes he'll test us in this in in different ways. And he does it because he loves us. pass or fail, he wants to increase our faith and wants to increase our our trust in him. Here's the 24:01 attitude that I would like to have. I read a story of John Wesley, uh, who was, I believe he was out traveling, preaching, and, uh, he came home and and somebody told him that his house had caught fire. He said, uh, hey, John, 24:16 just to let you know, your house burned to the ground. And I love his words. I love what he said. He says, not [laughter] not my house burned to the ground. He said, "The Lord's house burnt and one less responsibility for me." You 24:31 know, it's it's easy to say it. It's easy to say, "Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Everything everything belongs to the Lord. I I don't possess anything." But the Lord will allow these tests and in every situation I want to have this 24:42 attitude. I didn't lose my house. The it was the Lord's house. And and in a way, it set me free because I I don't have to worry about it. And you know, again, it's not, you know, there's practical things I would have to do, but it's an 24:55 attitude of heart where I recognize that, okay, that that must be he must have a good plan in this. You know, Romans 8:28, he must be working something out either specific for me, specifically for me, or for somebody else. So, he's allowed uh the house to 25:11 catch fire. But it was a house that I never possessed anyway. So, I I have peace even letting go of that because I was never holding tightly to it. I was tight holding tightly to him and again you know we can talk about it but these 25:24 are why the Lord will bring certain trials into our life and he'll he'll allow us to be tested and he'll see and we'll discover that the testing of our faith is more valuable than gold or silver whenever we get to experience 25:36 these things. So if the Lord takes things away for us from us or asks us to give them up, he's trying to set us free and h and let us have this attitude of perfect freedom and perfect peace in an area where you know we may not have had 25:52 that because we were so tightly wrapped around it. And it's so there's so many things that we're all I think we're all you know the temptation is the same for us. And the temptation is this. Do you possess anything other than Jesus Christ 26:05 himself? Now what that looks like in each of our circumstances may be different. For some of us it may be lots of money. For some of it it may be lots of power or control. For some of us it may be uh you know something else. It 26:18 may be holding tightly to a loved one. Whatever it is the temptation is the same. The Lord says listen I don't want you to possess anything but me. I want you to be free. All right. So let's recap. So this is what we talked 26:32 about this morning. We talked about the conditions of disciplehip and we said that there's three of them and we focused on this last one and we we acknowledged that Satan doesn't want us to take this seriously. He wants us to do what I did 26:46 for many many years, brothers and sisters. I would I would see these hard verses and I would quickly uh just keep reading. I would look for [clears throat] I would just, you know, read through my Bible and just quickly blow past these because I didn't see any 26:58 other, you know, Christians around me trying to follow this. But we want to take it seriously. And so if it says that I must give up all my possessions to be a disciple of Christ, then so be it. And I can be honest if I'm not 27:09 there, I can just be honest and say, Lord, I'm finding this very difficult. Help me. And I can cry out to him for help. And he wants to help us, but I want to take this verse ser seriously. And then we looked at the passage in 27:21 Luke 16. And we acknowledge that it's four disciples because it says it very clearly. Hey, you know, in the middle of talking to Pharisees and the crowds, he takes these third 13 verses and he says, "I'm just talking to you disciples." 27:35 And he says, he he uses a a scenario where he says, "Listen, in the world and businessmen are very wise and they know how to get along and they know how to get what they want and preserve themselves and preserve their business. 27:47 But I'm calling you to be as wise uh as wise as that in spiritual things." And so we we considered uh you know the verses verse 9, 11 and 13 specifically and we saw that verse 9 tells us exactly what this parable means that all of us 28:03 especially all of us in the US have been given so much and so instead of using it for selfish reasons because all of us are going to give an account and I don't think any one of us can say that we're ready to stand on judgment day and tell 28:17 the owner of the business that hey we were perfect managers we did everything perfectly. But at least with this understanding and going forward by the power of the Holy Spirit we can say okay I want to be more I'm going to be more careful I want to 28:31 be more wise. So I want to reduce the load the financial load of those around me and help them and serve them and I want to do this faithfully like verse 11 said and I want to be in you know I want to do it well so that when Jesus comes 28:45 back he'll see like I'm I'm trying to be faithful with money. And then in verse 13 that uh that I I want to cling to just like that picture of the hug. I want to wrap my arms around Jesus and not wrap my arms around my house or my 29:02 car or my 401k or my bank accounts. I don't want to wrap my arms around any of that stuff. I want to let all that go and keep it in an open palm. And yes, I can use it and there's a lot, you know, there are things that the Lord allows us 29:15 to accomplish with it, but as far as what I grab on to and hold on to that I want that to only be him. And then finally, the last thing is just it is talking about freedom. And brothers and sisters, I' I've discovered, you know, 29:29 you know, one of my favorite things about growing up and living in the U. United States is this this concept of freedom. You know, that I I I'm free to I'm free to join the church meeting this morning. There's nobody telling me that 29:40 there that I can't join because I have freedom. I can go to this. I can go to the store today. I can I have tremendous freedom and I I very much value it and I thank God for it. But even that is is nothing in comparison to what Jesus 29:52 wants to set us free from. You know Jesus said this, you know, if the son of man sets you free, you shall be free indeed. In other words, Josh, even compared to your freedom you have as a US citizen, that is nothing compared to 30:06 what I want to do in your life and truly set you free so that you don't grab into onto anything that is temporary. That you let go of all of it and you cling to me and you hold on to me. And that is a true freedom. And we can talk about it, 30:20 but it's only when the Lord allows it to work out in our life and we truly get to experience the reality of it. And brothers and sisters, I I want to be clear like I'm not there.
