0:01 Welcome once again to Words of Life program. We are studying through the Bible. Not verse by verse, but book by book. Because we want to cover our entire study of the Bible in 140 sessions. And now 0:22 we have reached the book of Joshua. Joshua is The book of Joshua covers a period of about 50 years. There's a lot of description of battles here. God is a god of war because he's a god 0:44 of love. He's perpetually at war against sin. And those who will lead God's people into sin like the devil. God is against them. 1:03 He's against preachers who encourage his people to live in sin. He supports those preachers who want to lead people out of sin. Remember that. If you want God to be on your side, 1:21 fight against sin. Bible says the flesh lusts against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh. Galatians 5. So, if you want the Holy Spirit to support you, join his battle against the flesh. Against your own flesh. 1:44 That's the message of the book of Joshua. The giants in the land of Canaan are a picture of the sins that dwell in your flesh that have ruled you for so many years. God wants you to conquer every one of 2:01 them. The subject of the book of Joshua is possessing the land. The word Joshua is the same name as the name Jesus. And that Moses could not lead people 2:20 into Canaan's land proves that the law cannot take us into the promised land. There are some hymns that speak of in English language anyway that speak of 2:37 Jordan as death and Canaan as heaven. But Canaan is not heaven. Because there are no giants to be killed in heaven. That's a wrong understanding people have. Jordan is a picture of death to self. 3:03 The Red Sea was a picture of death to the old man. And Jordan is a picture of death to the flesh. There were two seas that God had that the children of Israel had to cross. One is Red Sea. 3:22 The other is the River Jordan. And one is a picture of death to the old man. The other is a picture of death to the flesh. And attitude where which is actually executed once you enter the land of Canaan. The killing of Pharaoh and his army is a 3:45 picture of death to the old man. And And killing of the giants in the land of Canaan is a picture of death to the flesh. These two are not the same. 99% of believers do not know the 4:03 difference between old man and the flesh. 99% of people who have gone through Bible college and their professors don't know the difference between the old man and the flesh. All their study of Greek and Hebrew 4:23 doesn't teach them that. It's the Holy Spirit who teaches us the difference. You don't need to go to Bible school to understand the Bible. There are great deceptions that Satan has put upon Christians. That you can't know the Bible unless you 4:44 go to Bible school or do a course. How did the apostles know it? How did Jesus know it? How did the prophets know it? Not through Bible schools. They lived before God and God explained it to them. That's how I understood the Bible. 5:06 And that's how you can understand it, too. You don't need to go to a Bible school for a single day. The Holy Spirit can show you how to fight the flesh and overcome sin. So I want to encourage you to study the 5:25 word on your own. You don't have to be a pastor or a preacher. All of us need to know All of us need to know God's word. We all need to know God's word. We all need to know God's word. So in the book of Joshua we read of how the Canaanites are 5:42 killed. First of all, let Let explain the difference between the old man and the flesh. Remember, Pharaoh, picture of the old man, was killed by God. And here in Canaan, the giants that are 6:02 picture of the flesh, the Israelites had to kill them, not God. What is the difference? The old man is the mind that wants to sin. When we are born again, God kills that. 6:21 And he puts a new man within us. That's called the new birth. That's what we testify to in baptism. Pictured in the burial of the Egyptian army under the Red Sea. But the flesh is different. 6:41 The flesh is not the mind that wants to sin. That is the old man. The flesh is the the source of temptation. Many desires, lusts. And when we respond to them, we sin. 7:03 So even after we are born again, we still have the flesh. The flesh tempts in so many ways. Strong desires. If you overcome them, you sin. Many Christians are thoroughly confused because they use a word which is never found in the Bible. 7:24 That's the word sinful nature. Take a concordance, you'll never find that word in the Bible. But that's a surprise to many Christians. Because they use it all the time. So when somebody uses the word sinful nature, I ask them, "Are you referring to the 7:44 old man or you referring to the flesh?" And they're thoroughly confused because they don't know what they're talking about. Most Christians are careless in their study of Bible. They're very exact right down to the last paisa when it comes to comes to 8:02 keeping their accounts or their passbooks in the bank. If you were as careful in studying the Bible, you'd know the Bible very well by now. But most Christians don't, unfortunately. So, what we see in the book of Joshua is 8:24 the overcome a picture of the overcoming of the flesh. Why did God kill the Canaanites? It was not murder, it was surgery. You know, even a doctor will cut off 8:41 somebody's foot. Because he loves him. Because the man's got diabetes. Gangrene has spread all over his foot, it's going to kill his whole body that disease. And the doctor says, "I tried my best. 9:03 Now, there's no way out." And suppose a person who doesn't know anything about surgery, he sees a doctor cutting off somebody's leg, he thinks it's his enemy. No, he's his friend. 9:25 So, to prevent the disease of the Canaanites spreading all over the world, God cut them off. The Israelites were like the surgeon who cut off that leg. Even in cancer sometimes doctors remove 9:43 a whole organ. Because That's the only way to save the body. And we see the same thing in the time of Noah. God prevented the spread of corruption 10:01 by destroying the rest of the world. So When we don't understand these things A lot of foolish people say how can a God of love command the killing of so many people? Why do we hang certain people? 10:19 Why does a good judge say that a certain person should be hanged? If God overlooks sin in your life, that means he doesn't love you. That's like a father who doesn't care 10:37 for disease in his son's body. A father who loves his son will do everything to get rid of that disease in his body. Joshua accepted the standards of God, otherwise he would not have killed those 10:55 Canaanites. Joshua is something like the book of Acts in the New Testament. Mighty manifestation of God's power. But then you come to the book of Judges after that where you see God's people 11:14 are backsliding. And that's what's happened to a lot of Christians to in Christianity, too. So with that introduction, let's look at this book of Joshua. Chapter 1 verse 3. 11:32 Every place where the sole of your foot treads I've given to What if you don't go and tread that place with your foot? Then it won't be given to you. So, sin is like that. Suppose there's a sin you are defeated by in your life. 11:52 And claim victory over it in Jesus' name. And seek for grace to overcome it. That sin will always remain in your life. But every place where you put the sole of your foot, that's given to you. This is like Romans 6:14. 12:15 Sin shall not rule over you. And verse five. We can read it like this. No sin will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. No giant. No man. That is the promise of God here. 12:34 If you read the book of Joshua like this, you see what a tremendous message it has. To live an overcoming life. Here is a book about how to live the victorious life. One important principle. 12:53 Verse eight. This book of the law refers to the word of Christ. Shall not depart from our mouth. You must meditate on it. Obey it completely. And then you will be spiritually prosperous and spiritually successful. In the Old Testament, according to verse 13:16 eight, it was earthly prosperity and success. Prosperity and success are two things which is all the world seeks for. But this for it only in the world. We seek for it spiritually. That's the 13:34 difference. And we can't go away from the clear word of God to the left or right. Then we can be overcomers. And we have God's command saying, "Be strong and courageous." Verse 9, "Don't 13:53 tremble or be dismayed. The Lord your God is with you." It's not enough to have God's word. We must have God himself. A lot of people have God's word, but God is not with them. In chapter two, 14:13 we read about Rahab. Joshua sent some two men as spies to go into the land of to to city of Jericho. And there they went into the house of a harlot called Rahab. And she had faith 14:35 that these are God's people. Even though she was a prostitute, they would not have stayed with her if they felt that she would go and report them to the king. She told them, "Listen, I've heard that God is with you and I believe that." 14:57 And she showed them how her faith would be used. She protected them from the people who wanted to come and catch them. Because people had seen these two men go into Rahab's house. And so the king sent word to Rahab verse 15:13 three saying, "Bring out those men who have come into your house." But the women had women had hidden them. And To protect their lives. She said, "Yes, the men came here, but I 15:30 don't know where they they are from." And before it was dark, they went out, and I don't know where the men went. "You pursue them quickly." Chapter 2, verse 5. "You may get them." But she had actually hidden them on the 15:47 roof. So the king's men believed Rahab. And they went looking for them on the road to Jordan. In the New Testament, this passage is taken by James 16:06 and says in verse chapter 2, verse 25, "Was not the Rahab the harlot justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way?" In James, chapter 2, and verse 25, that's what James says. This action of Rahab's, 16:36 where she even told a lie, was said she it is a proof of her faith in God. Now, don't compare Rahab with our standards in the New Covenant. She was not even under the Old Covenant. 16:57 She was under no covenant. So you can't compare her standard of life with ours under the New Covenant. You can't even compare you can't even compare her standard of life with people under the Old Covenant. See, there are three covenants. There 17:16 there are levels of life. No covenant, old covenant, new covenant. And Rahab was down below lowest no covenant. She had faith. And she proved her faith by protecting those messengers and sending them out 17:35 another way. She honored God. And God honored her. Not only by saving her life. You know, she told them, "Please remember me when you fellas come and 17:53 occupy this land." She became one of the ancestors of Jesus. You read that in Matthew chapter 1. This person was no descendant of Abraham. Who was the most well-known prostitute 18:11 in Jericho. Becomes one of the ancestors of Jesus. Because she had faith. It's a great story. And it's worth thinking about. In chapter 3 we read about the ark going first across 18:30 the river Jordan into the land. Before the people went. And it says in verse 6 of chapter 3, the ark went ahead of the people. And that's a picture of Jesus going 18:48 ahead of us into this life of victory. Jesus is our forerunner. He has faced every temptation we face. Conquered every giant in Canaan that we have to conquer. He overcame all of them. 19:08 And he says, "Follow me." He's our forerunner. This is the ark that went ahead of the people. And we see something further here. In chapter four, 19:26 they were told in chapter four to take 12 stones from the middle of the river. You read that when they finished crossing, Joshua called 12 men in verse two. And he said 19:46 In verse three, he said, "Take 12 stones out of the middle of Jordan and take them to the land." And they did that. And when he said, "When the children of Israel ask you later, what do these stones mean?" Tell them we took these stones from the 20:07 middle of this river. They were not stones that were here. They were taken from the middle of the river. And this is the proof that God took us through this river by drying up the river. It was a picture of resurrection. 20:30 Stones coming up from the bottom of the river and being kept here. They were at the bottom of the river. Now they are here. Stones that were It's a picture of something coming out of death. And it's very interesting to see here 20:53 that the river Jordan parted as soon as the feet of the priests touched the water. Chapter three, verse 13. In the old In the Red Sea, it was not like that. In the Red Sea, the whole sea parted, 21:13 and then the people went in. But God was leading them to a higher level of faith. He said, "This time I'm not going to part the waters. You put your foot in, 21:31 then it will part." So, God leads us from one step of faith to a higher level of faith. He doesn't want us to live at the same level of faith all the time. And in chapter 4, 21:50 we read further. After they had crossed, and they came across to the land, the priests were standing there all the time till everybody had crossed. And then they came to the place called 22:08 Gilgal, we read in verse 19. And there they We read in verse chapter 5 with the people were circumcised. So, this crossing the Jordan is a 22:26 picture of our being crucified and risen with Christ. And in the circumcision is a picture of our actually putting the thing to death in our own life. The first refers to our position in 22:47 Christ. We read in Romans 6, "You are crucified with Christ." That's what we read in chapter 4. We have died with Christ and we have risen with Christ. Now, it says put to death the deeds of 23:06 the body. Through the power of the Holy Spirit. That is the second position. That's in chapter five. It's very beautiful, this picture in the old covenant. The Lord says, "When you do this, 23:24 the reproach of verse nine of chapter five, the reproach of Egypt is rolled away now." If you don't put the flesh to death in your life every day, then the reproach of your old sinful 23:41 life is still upon you. When can you say the reproach of Egypt is rolled away? Not when they crossed the Red Sea. Not even when they accept their position in Christ. When they actually use the knife to cut 24:00 off and circumcise. And here we read the Lord saying, "I have rolled away the reproach from you." And then in verse 13, just before they went into Jericho, 24:20 Joshua sees a vision of a man with a sword. And he says, "Who are you? Are you on our side or on the adversary's side?" And he says, "This is the Lord himself." And what does he say? "I'm not on your side. I'm not on your 24:37 enemy's side." You know, that's what the Lord says. "I'm not on your side. I'm not on the devil's side. I am the captain. You better get on my side." It's not a question of God coming to our side. No, no, no, no. 24:57 We have to get on God's side. have to get on God's side. When it says if God be for us That means we get on to God's side. We don't say Lord you come on my side. We get on to God's side. 25:15 The Lord says no, verse 14. I'm not on your side or the enemy's side. I am on my side. Joshua bowed down. That's how the conquest of Canaan began. That's how it must be in our life, too. 25:37 We can be overcomers. God bless you. Once again, we welcome you to Words of Life. Now study of the scriptures we have come to the book of Joshua. And in our last study we saw something about what the book of Joshua 25:57 emphasized. Basically, a life of victory over sin. Where the giants in the land of Canaan picture the giant lusts that dwell in our flesh. That must be put to death. 26:20 Like it says in Galatians 5:24, those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its affections thereof. So, that is pictured in the crossing of the Jordan and the circumcision. And finally, in the killing of the 26:42 giants. In chapter 6 we read about the conquest of Jericho. We read there that God did not want them to fight with these enemies. He taught them an object lesson right 26:59 from the very first. I'll teach you to depend on me for the victory. Jericho was completely surrounded by high walls. There was no way they could go in. 27:19 The gates were shut. If people came near the walls from the top of the walls, they'd all be killed with bows and arrows. So, what did God tell them to do? He said, "I want you to just march 27:36 around the city." Verse three. Go round it for six days. I have given you this city. And on the seven priests will carry seven trumpets. And on the seventh day 27:58 you must circle the city seven times. And blow the trumpets. Six days you just march quietly once. And on the day when the seventh day when they blow the long blast with the ram's horn the people must shout a great shout. 28:23 And the wall of the city will fall down flat. That is a promise by God. And so what do we learn from this? Well, first of all, let's see what happened. So, they did exactly that. Six days they 28:41 just went around. He said, "You must not let any sound come from your mouth for six days verse 10. When I tell you to shout, shout. So, the priests went round. 28:59 Second day, six days like that verse 14. And the seventh day verse 15, they marched round seven times. Can you imagine the people in Jericho watching what's happening here? And then he said, the end when the 29:17 priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said in verse 16, "Shout, the Lord's given you the city." Everybody but Rahab must be killed. All the items in the city verse 17 belong to the Lord. You must not take anything from there. 29:40 Don't covet them verse 18. Don't touch them. Do it, you'll bring a curse on the whole camp. All the silver, gold verse 19, bronze, iron must all be given to the Lord. People shouted. 30:00 And as they shouted verse 20, the wall fell down flat. And they took the city. Utterly destroyed everything there including the cattle. Brought Rahab out alive with her father 30:17 and mother and brothers verse 23. Just because one woman trusted the Lord. And honored God. Her father, mother, brothers, and 30:34 relatives were all saved. If you honor God, and if you are a new believer like Rahab, through that God can even bless your unconverted relative. And bring them also to Christ. 31:01 And then they burned the city with fire, verse 24. And they took all the silver and gold and put and gave it to the Lord. And then Joshua said, "Cursed is everyone, verse 26, who tries to build this city again. His firstborn son will die. 31:22 And his younger son will also die." That's actually happened later on when somebody tried to build the city. So, what do we learn from this? Shall we walk around cities trying to claim them for the Lord? We don't see anybody in the New 31:41 Testament doing that. But there are some people today who do such things. The Lord hasn't told them. They're just imitating Joshua. It's like trying to go through the Red 31:58 Sea expecting it to split open. Nobody will do something so foolish because the Red Sea doesn't split open. But walking around a city today is a very easy thing and you can imagine you have claimed it for the Lord. Everybody in that city doesn't get 32:22 saved. Don't be deceived by these techniques where people try to imitate some Old Testament example. And then people say, "Shout and the walls of the devil will fall. I can show you an example in 1 Samuel 32:43 chapter 4 where they shouted and the enemy defeated Israel. You can't overcome Satan by shouting. And if the Lord tells you to shout, shout. When the Bible says the Lord is in his holy temple let all the earth keep 33:01 silent before him. That's the time to keep silent. They didn't get the victory because they shouted. They got the victory because they obeyed the Lord. Many Christians are looking for a 33:19 technique. Walk around the city. These are all techniques. There's no value in them. It's like thinking that you'll grow strong if you grow your hair long like Samson. You got to be crazy if you think like 33:38 that. gave him that supernatural power because he was a Nazarite. It's not because he grew his hair long. I want to warn you of these foolish leaders who try to ask you to follow techniques. And many simple believers, they get 34:02 show them some words and make them do it. I'll tell you one way to find out all these false prophets. Everything they tell you to do will be found in the Old Testament. That's one way by which you can detect 34:21 them. Their prosperity gospel comes from the Old Testament. They're saying that God will heal you of all your diseases found in the Old Testament. And to go around city wall, shout and all that, is all Old Testament. Why do they go to the Old Covenant for 34:43 all their promises? Because they can find nothing in the teaching of the apostles or Jesus Christ. So, be careful of any preacher who's always going to the Old Testament. Tell you what to do. Is the Old Testament important? 35:07 Sure. Colossians 2 says everything is a shadow of what is fulfilled in Christ. We can study the Passover lamb, but we don't have to kill a lamb today. They waved offerings before God. We don't have to 35:24 do that today. We studied about the offerings in Leviticus. We value the Old Testament. But they are a picture. On all of them, you're looking at a picture. If Leviticus was a picture, things in Joshua are also picture. Don't forget 35:41 that. In chapter 7, we read how Israel was defeated in Ai. An overcomer can be defeated again. Overcame Jericho, defeated in Ai. Because the Christian life is not a 36:01 once-for-all experience. We walk with God continuously. And don't despise the enemy. That's the lesson we learn from chapter 7. Why did they have to run away before the people of Ai? Joshua was so self-confident. 36:22 Oh, he said, "Ai is a small town. We don't have to send so many people." Verse 3, only two or three thousand are enough. So they said, "Okay, we'll send three thousand." And 36 of them got killed and they ran away before the people 36:39 Verse six, Joshua tore his clothes and fell down before the Lord and said, "Lord, we are scared. What's going to happen if this is happening with a small city? The rest of the giants will kill us." What can I say, Lord? Verse eight, 36:55 Israel has turned their back to their enemies. Why have you brought us here? Did you bring us here, verse seven, to kill us before these people? Because the Canaanites will hear this. And they'll finish us off. 37:14 And the Lord said, "Get up." I can give you victory. But there's sin in the camp. Somebody has taken things which I said they should not take. You see, it's sin. It's 37:31 disobedience that makes us defeated. So he was told to consecrate the people. Joshua rose in the morning, verse 16. To find out who committed the sin because nobody confessed it. And they cast lots. 37:54 And Achan's family was found. And Joshua said to Achan, he spoke so tenderly, "My son, please give God glory and tell me what you did." And Achan confessed. 38:12 He said, "There were a few things I saw. Now I will say the kind of thing I parted. A beautiful mantle from Babylon. See, Babylon comes up here, too. Spirit of Babylon. I saw some silver and gold. I took them and hid them in my tent. 38:33 Maybe Achan thought, here I've come all the way to Canaan and God says you can't take any of the gold or silver here. I'll keep a little for myself. But there's plenty here. The same spirit of Judas is carried to 38:50 took little bit from the offering bags. Be careful about taking what belongs to the Lord. What belongs to God must go to God. What belongs to Caesar must go to Caesar. 39:08 We are to keep only what God has given to us. So see what happened. They brought everything out. Including those things that were stolen. And his whole family. And they stoned them to death and burned them with fire. And they put a big heap of stones, verse 39:30 26 there. There was no mercy. You disobeyed God and you not only you suffered but your family suffered too. See what it says there. 39:47 His sons, his daughters. His sheep. His oxen, everyone. All stoned to death. Then the Lord said to Joshua. Okay, now you can go and conquer the land. 40:05 And they went in and it was victory after victory after that. In chapter 9 we read about another example where Joshua was deceived. You know, after another victory again he becomes proud. 40:23 It's very easy to forget the blessings God gives us. They forget that he is the one who gave us the victory. And we see that again and again in the book of Joshua. They got victory in Jericho and they became self-confident. 40:42 Let's set matters right and again got victory. They became self-confident. And so Joshua thought he was very clever now. And he was thoroughly deceived by the inhabitants of Gibeon who were supposed to be 41:00 killed. See what they did in chapter nine. They acted craftily and they took worn-out sacks and pretended they'd come from a long distance. And they told Joshua, "We have come from 41:20 a long distance." Joshua believed them. See, it says here um that they believed the verse 14, "The men of Israel did not ask counsel from 41:38 the Lord." And made an agreement with them. Do you know how many things in your life you can be saved from if you first just go to the Lord and say, "Lord, what do you think about this?" What does it 41:56 What does it cost you to just go and pray before you do a little thing? What should I do here now? Lord, I'm in a fix. I don't know what to do. Should I take this decision or that decision? Please guide me, Lord. 42:14 And the Lord will guide you. That's what we see here. They did not seek counsel from the Lord. And it came 3 days later they discovered these fellows had deceived them. They had made a covenant. 42:33 So they could not break it. Joshua said, "Okay, we can't kill you. Verse 22, but you're going to you're 23, you're going to be slaves for the rest of your life." What is the warning we get here? 1 John 4:1. 42:54 Beloved, believe not every spirit. All the things that you see on television and platforms in the name of Jesus, don't believe everything. Test the spirits. 43:11 See whether they are of God. How do you test them? See whether they are manifesting the spirit of Christ. Is that man ministering in the spirit of Christ? Or is he like a film star and a magician? A lot of today's preachers uh remind me 43:31 more of film stars and magicians than Jesus and the apostles. I'm not deceived by them. I don't give them my money. And I'm not fooled that they are men of God. 43:49 But they're good magicians. Film stars. Good psychologists. Respect them like I would respect Peter and Paul. Don't be deceived. In chapter 10, 44:07 we read of another attack and now there's a lot of victory here. And the when the enemy was not defeated by sunset, we read 44:26 Joshua telling the sun to stand still in verse 13. And amazing, by faith, he does that. And the moon stood still and the sun stood still. They had a great victory. 44:45 And you know, Joshua said to them, verse eight, chapter 10, The Lord said to Joshua, "Not one of them will be able to stand before you. I have given them to you. No sin can conquer you. God will even stop the sun to give you 45:04 victory over sin." Can you think of any greater miracle than the sun stopping? God says, "I'll even do that to give your enemies into your hand." And 45:21 we read finally Joshua calling out the chiefs of the Israel. Verse 24, "Put your feet on the necks of these kings." He says, "You have conquered them." So, we see here 45:43 victory is God's will for His people. And all these kings were defeated and all our sins can be defeated. In chapter 13, God says to Joshua, "You're getting old now. There's a lot of land still remaining to 46:02 be conquered. And you must conquer it. Joshua and Caleb had come into the land. Caleb had said earlier, "Even I'm 85 years old." He says, "I'm still as strong." In chapter 14. 14 he this gives his testimony in verse 46:24 7 onwards. He says in verse 10, "I'm 85 years old today, but I'm just as strong." Joshua also was like that. But Joshua was told in chapter 13 verse 1. That there's still a lot of land to be 46:43 possessed. So, I want you to go in and possess it. And that's what the Lord says to us as believers. There are many areas in your life that still need to be conquered. Don't leave them alone. 47:06 Go and conquer the whole land. Possess the land. Now, I want to say to you brothers and sisters and all of you who are watching me. Learn to value godly older men like Joshua and Caleb. People like Joshua and Caleb never 47:27 retire. Joshua lived to more than 100 years old. And he continued faithful until the end. But we read the sad words here in Joshua chapter 16. Chapter First of all, chapter 15 verse 47:49 63. The Jebusites the sons of Judah could not drive them out. Chapter 16 verse 10. The Canaanites still live in the midst of Ephraim. Chapter 17 verse 12. 48:11 The sons of Manasseh did not take possession of certain cities. This is a picture of many, many believers. They allowed certain sins to remain in their life even now. They haven't driven out those sins. But Joshua reminds them of God's 48:33 faithfulness in chapter 21. Verse 45. Wonderful promise. He says not one of the good promises that the Lord made has failed so far. All of them have been fulfilled. 48:53 We can say that in our life. We should be able to say that at the end of our life. Not a single promise that God has made has ever failed. Every promise God gave I want to challenge you. 49:13 Make that the goal in your life. That towards the end at the end of your life you can give this testimony. Not one promise of God has failed in my life. That's a wonderful thing. 49:32 That's what we read here in Joshua 21:45. And then in the remaining chapters we read about Joshua's farewell. Chapter 22 until the end. And one of the things he says 49:52 He says in chapter 24 You can choose whom you want to serve. But as for me and not only me, my house as well. verse 15 We will serve the Lord. We're not going to serve any of these 50:12 other gods. I can't force you, he says.
