0:00 So, in these days we've been uh looking at the subject of growing in Christ-likeness. From Matthew chapter 5, chapter 6, and chapter 7. Because everything written here 0:24 is really the life of Jesus that he wants to share with us. Remember that we cannot imitate and produce this life. There's a lot of difference between 0:41 imitating the life of Christ and that is a danger that we all face and partaking of his nature. Imitating his life would be like getting fruit from the market and beautiful fruit and hanging it on our 1:00 barren tree. Whereas partaking of his life is where the fruit comes out from the tree itself. So that's a very subtle danger and we have to be always aware of it. I need to partake of his nature and if you recognize that, 1:19 you will always seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Because the standard is so high here in these chapters in the nine right attitudes and we've seen already eight wrong attitudes. So, we want to now look at Matthew 1:35 chapter 7 and verse 1 which is the ninth wrong attitude which is judging others. Now whenever a Christian sincerely seeks to live by the standards mentioned in Matthew 5, 6, and 7 seeking to pursue those nine right 1:55 attitudes and avoiding all these eight wrong attitudes that we have considered so far, the standard of his life is going to be so much better than the lives of average Christians around him, that there'd be a tremendous temptation 2:13 in him to judge them. And that's why the Lord concludes with this wrong attitude finally. Once you've come into this wonderful life described in Matthew 5 and 6, be careful that you don't judge others. That's not your calling. 2:33 God is the only one who's a judge of others. It's amazing that Jesus said these words in John chapter 8. Let me seek to follow Jesus' example. Listen to his words. John 8: 15. Do you know this verse? You judge He was talking to the 2:53 Pharisees. Verse 13 to the Pharisees. John 8:15. You judge according to the flesh. Did he say, "I judge according to the spirit?" No. He says, "I'm not judging anyone." Amazing statement 3:11 from the one who had every right to judge others, whose life was so pure and holy that if he judged, and like he says in the next verse, "Even if I do judge, my judgment will be true. It'll be accurate because I'm always one with the Father 3:28 in my judgment. But, I do not judge anyone. I'm not judging anyone." Now, we need to see the command, "Do not judge others" from the life of Jesus. 3:47 Did he judge the Pharisees? He exposed the Pharisees very severely and he spoke words of condemnation on them because he was the son of God. And it's right for us to expose false 4:07 teachers and false prophets and anyone who's seeking to lead Christians astray, deceivers. So, to do not judge does not mean do not discern. It's very important to discern 4:25 between good and evil. Let me show you this verse in Philippians in chapter 1 so that we have a balanced understanding of this. In Philippians chapter 1 he's talking about growing in love 4:42 and love is the greatest virtue. And it says here in Philippians 1 verse 9, "I pray that your love will abound increase more and more more and more still more and more 4:59 in real knowledge and discernment." So, one of the marks of coming to a higher degree of love is that you discern. And it is only the one whose heart is filled with love who can discern 5:19 properly. If I'm not pursuing after love my discernment will be wrong. It'll be based on my own assessment and my own understanding my own preferences and prejudices. So, I have to begin with increasing and abounding in love more 5:38 and more and then God will give me accurate discernment. And so I'm still not here to judge people, but I must discern. I must avoid people who are particularly if you have a responsibility. You have to discern people. 5:58 So, where does this line of judging end? I mean, let's think of Are we never supposed to judge any situation? I believe it depends on whether you have authority in a situation. See, Paul says to the Corinthian church in 1 Corinthians 5 6:16 when he tells them to put a certain man who's lived in sin out of the church. Put him out of the church, he says. And then he says in second uh 1 Corinthians 5 and verse 12, "What do I have to do with judging outsiders? I'm not here to judge all 6:31 those worldly people. But don't you judge those who are within the church?" Yes, the elders have a right to judge those who are within the church. Those who are outside, God will judge them. But God gives the responsibility 6:45 to elders to judge within the church. And he gives the responsibility to fathers to judge their own children. You see, if two of your children have a disagreement or a conflict and they come to you, you can't say I won't judge. 7:04 If you're a father or a mother, you have to judge there. So, judging is in the sphere in which God has given you responsibility. That's important and I should not try to escape that responsibility to judge within that sphere. 7:20 And if you're an elder in a church, you have to you're called to exercise judgment there this with based on a discernment that has come out of love for your flock. That's very important. For example, if you're working in an 7:35 office or a factory and you got responsibility there as a manager or something like that, you have to exercise judgment. Otherwise, you will not be fulfilling your responsibility. So, we need to understand what this means. 7:48 But, outside that sphere, I'm not called to judge anybody. Paul was very strict in exercising judgment over his the churches he had responsibility for. He spoke some strong words to people. He called certain people carnal 8:08 and not spiritual. So, let's just keep that in mind as when we think of this word. The other thing I want to show you is from Isaiah in chapter 11, where we we read that Jesus said he would not 8:27 judge, but we read in Isaiah chapter 11 how he did judge. And Isaiah chapter 11, we read of the spirit of the Lord, verse two, resting upon Jesus. It's a prophetic reference to Christ. The spirit of wisdom, understanding, 8:44 counsel, strength, and knowledge, and the fear of the Lord, or reverence for the Lord. The Holy Spirit, it says here, this is the seven-fold spirit mentioned in Revelation. Uh wisdom, the spirit of the Lord, wisdom, understanding, counsel, 8:58 strength, knowledge, and reverence for the Lord. So, one mark of reverence for the Lord, if he delights, it says here in verse three, uh one of these seven qualifications is highlighted, and it says the fear of the Lord. And it 9:15 says here that Jesus would delight in reverence for the Father. And then, one of the marks of one who has reverence for God and lives in constant reverence for God is that he will not judge by what his eyes see. 9:34 And he will not make a decision by what his ears hear. This is so completely foreign and contrary to the race of Adam. I remember years ago the Lord telling me how he said, "All your life you have judged by what your eyes see and what your ears 9:52 hear. Now I want to move you out of that realm into another realm, the realm of the spirit, where you will not judge by what your eyes see or your ears hear. Uh you will take in that information. We get a lot of information from our eyes 10:07 and ears. It's not that we go around blind and deaf. We get information through our eyes and ears, but we don't come to a judgment merely on that information. That's the point here. Most uh human beings judge on the basis of 10:21 what they've seen, they've heard. They say, "I know." And I've seen in the church, I would say more than 90% of believers or 99% of believers have this evil habit of judging on the basis of what they've seen and what they've heard. And if you, my dear 10:34 brothers and sisters, examine yourself, you'll find it is true. Even in your home, you judge by what your eyes see and what your ears hear, and very often it could be completely wrong. You could be judging your husband and judging your wife on 10:48 the basis of something you saw and heard, and you may not know all the facts. How often we've all done that. And our failure in this area in the past where we've discovered that we've judged wrongly, and even perhaps hurt people sometimes, 11:03 should make us humble ourselves that say, "Lord, I never want to judge by what my eyes see or my ears hear. I want to take in the information. I want to digest it. I want to take it before God, and I want God to give me discernment in 11:17 this situation as to what I should say or what I should do." So, it says here that Jesus would never judge by what his eyes see or his ears hear. I've often said how the sun rising and setting is one of the means by which God shows us every day 11:33 you can't trust your eyes. For many thousands of years up to about 6 or 700 years ago everybody in the world from the time of Adam felt that the sun was going round the earth. Because that's what their eyes told them. Till somebody discovered 11:52 700 years ago in Europe some scientists and astronomers that that's not true. It's the earth rotating on its axis. But people could say, "I don't see the earth moving. I don't feel the earth moving under my feet." You can't trust your feeling. 12:09 You can't trust what you see. You can't even trust what you hear. Because there are sounds above the frequency of the human ear that we cannot hear, but even dogs hear that. So, all this is to show us God is trying to humble us saying, "You can't trust 12:24 what your eyes see or ears hear even in the ordinary things of creation." How much more in spiritual things? It's good for us to humble ourselves and say very many many situations I don't know. I don't have all the facts. 12:41 And uh even when I have all the facts I don't know the motives. So, I will not judge by what my eyes see and what my ears hear. And it says here, but Jesus with says in Isaiah 11:4 with righteousness one day he will judge 12:59 the poor and with fairness. And if I want to judge with righteousness and fairness, I must begin with love. If I don't love, I cannot judge righteousness and fairness. And see what the scripture tells us, a command which I believe the vast 13:13 majority of Christians do not obey. 1 Corinthians in chapter 4. Please ask yourself whether you have obeyed this verse. Please take this seriously, my dear brothers and sisters. If you want to 13:32 grow in the Christian life, if you are serious about becoming like Christ, take this verse seriously. If you are serious about spiritual growth, if you are serious about putting your selfish nature to death, and your pride to death, here's a verse 13:46 that can really help you. And I'll tell you it won't be easy because we've all disobeyed this verse so much in the past. Listen to it. 1 Corinthians 4:5. Do not go on passing judgment before the time. So, that implies there is a time when 14:04 we'll be permitted to judge. Okay? When is that time? It's after we finish our life on this earth. Wait until the Lord comes. All those who have a tremendous itch 14:21 to judge others, great lust to judge others, hang on. God will give you the opportunity to judge. Why can't you wait till the Lord comes? Cuz then you'll be able to judge accurately. I'll tell you why. It says here. Because when the Lord comes, 14:39 there are two things he's going to bring to light which you can't see right now. See, man looks on the outward appearance, and God looks at the heart. And that's why we can't judge. Because God sees more than the outward 14:54 appearance. That's why we can't go by what we see or what we hear. What we see and what we hear is only the outward appearance and the outward sounds and reports and things like that. But, here are two things that we don't see. 15:11 One is the things hidden in darkness. That means the areas of another person's life which we cannot see. How much is he struggling and battling against the habit which you see? Maybe he's really trying to get rid of it. 15:29 And much more than perhaps you're trying to get rid of some of your bad habits. Here he's crying out to God perhaps in secret, "Lord, help me." And maybe there's so many good things he does in secret which you don't know. 15:43 So, we don't know the things hidden in darkness. A truly God-fearing man, for example, will not reveal how much good he does in secret. All you see is he he'll try to conceal his good deeds so much that you may think he's doing nothing. 16:00 You may think of him as a very selfish person. He may be a very generous person, but he doesn't let anybody know about it. And it's so easy to judge by what we think we know when we know so little. What do you know? Think about the people 16:15 you know in your own church whom you've known for many years. Tell me how much do you know about their private life? How do you know how they behave at home? How do they speak to their wives and husbands at home? You don't know. 16:28 How do you know whether they are doing kind, unselfish acts of goodness to others? How do you know whether they are sacrificing in secret to help many people? All you All you see is on the outside and you form an opinion by looking at their face or 16:42 their actions. It says, "Don't judge because there are things hidden in the darkness which one day the Lord will reveal when he comes." Every one of us, what we have done in private will one day be revealed like on a on a screen. A video tape of our 17:00 memory is going to play back everything we did from day one of our life. And then we will see a lot of things that can't be seen on the outside. For example, all the things that are done in secret. And that includes the thoughts. 17:16 Even your wife or husband doesn't know the thoughts you're thinking. All that will be revealed whether good it says good or bad doesn't matter. Everything will be revealed. And that's one thing. The second thing is the motive 17:31 of men's hearts. Why he did it? For example, you see a a believer whom you know, whom you respect going into a a bar where they are drinking. And you may think, "Oh, I didn't realize this guy goes to the bar to drink." He 17:51 may be going there with tracts to witness to people. Which God will reveal in the final day. But it's so easy to judge on the basis of what we see because we have such a tremendous lust to judge. I believe the lust to get angry and the 18:09 lust after sex for men and the lust to judge are some of the universal lusts found in all human beings. And we have to put it at death. And even people who are very strict about trying to conquer anger and very strict with dirty sexual thoughts are 18:28 not so strict with the lust to judge others according to what you see or according to what you have heard. If you don't believe me, examine your own heart and see what I'm saying is not true. Some of you are very faithful in trying 18:43 to overcome your anger. And also really seeking to battle sexual thoughts and put them all to death. What about judging others? Are you just as zealous to put that lust to death? There you see. That's why Jesus puts it last in the 18:57 list so that we think about it. And especially if you have obeyed all the other kept all the other nine at right attitudes and detested all the wrong attitudes, then the great danger is to begin to judge others who you think 19:09 haven't come as far as you have. And especially if you you're in a church that's preaching holiness and victory over sin and the new covenant, it's so easy to judge others. Don't So easy to judge other churches. Remember this, dear brothers and 19:23 sisters, that one day when Christ comes that word will be fulfilled that many who are first here will be last there. And many who are lost will be first. That even in a church some of you some of some whom you think you don't think 19:36 much of. You say, "Ah, that guy is not so spiritual and he's not He may be doing a lot of things in secret you know nothing about." Which will be revealed in the final day, all the good that he does in secret and all the ways he helped people and he 19:49 never advertised that to anyone. And it'll come out in the final day. So, things hidden in darkness and the motive with which he did things. And some people you appreciate so much. See, today there are a lot of people who 20:03 appreciate preachers. I'll tell you honestly, I can never appreciate a preacher who asks for money. I can never appreciate a man who sends letters asking for money to support him cuz I never see Jesus or the apostles doing it. 20:18 No, but we don't know all that. So, sometimes um we can judge a person wrongly. Where where we know the facts where a person is openly asking I mean I see he's a lot of I've seen a lot of preachers openly asking for money on television or from 20:35 their pulpits and wanting more and more and taking advantage of churches. It's so obvious that you have to discern and you got to avoid such people. But I'm talking about other situations where you don't know. Where you don't know what is the good 20:52 that he's done in secret, the his attitude towards the commandments. We don't know. So, it's always safer not to judge. It says in that day, 1 Corinthians 4:5, "Every man's praise will come to him from God." Imagine one 21:07 day you see one of those brothers whom you had judged so severely on earth and you see God praising him. How will you feel that day? Lord, I don't want to do it. So, I don't want to judge by what my eyes see and I what my ears hear, but as 21:21 an elder in the church I want to discern. When a person comes to join our church, I want to have discernment. I ask God for discernment. In fact, it's one of the gifts of the spirit mentioned in 1 Corinthians in chapter 12. 21:36 1 Corinthians 12, it says here God gives different gifts by the Holy Spirit and one of the gifts mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:10 is discerning of spirits. It's one of the most important gifts for an elder. That if you ask God for it 21:53 and if God has given you the responsibility for being an elder you know, a person comes to join your church and you should ask God to give you that discernment that you're able to see through him and see things that are not obvious on 22:07 the outside. Otherwise, you can never be an effective elder. Now, it's very easy for you to imagine that you have it. I'll tell you this. You'll never have it if you don't love. You got to begin with the verse I showed you in Philippians 22:22 and chapter 1 that your love will grow in discernment. You remember that verse we looked at at the beginning Philippians 1 and verse 9 that your love will grow and abound in discernment. So, don't start with discernment first. 22:39 You got to love people and then God will give us discernment. If you don't love them, God's not going to give you discernment. And it's very important in our day when there's such a lot of false teaching and so many preachers who are after 22:51 money and honor that we need to expose them if that's your calling. But we need discernment. And people coming into the church with wrong motives to get some advantage for themselves, to get some benefit for themselves, to gain to seek 23:06 their own. We need to ask God to give us discernment. I'm not saying that we should drive them out, but we need to keep them at a distance. The Bible says in Psalm 138 that God keeps proud people at a distance. I want to be like God, and I want to 23:23 keep proud people at a distance. So, when a person comes to your church, if you discern the spirit of pride there, keep them at a distance. Help them Let them sit at the back row, and don't give them any responsibility till they have learned to humble 23:35 themselves. Discernment is so important. I mentioned this because uh there's a lot of difference between discernment and judgment. So, it's not that we don't discern. Coming back to Matthew chapter 7, do not judge because in the way you judge, you will 23:50 be judged one day by your standard of measure, Matthew 7:2. It'll be measured to you. So, this is also going to be true that we when we judge somebody, in the final day, God's going to use that standard to judge us. So, be very 24:06 careful. So, if I'm merciful to others, God will be merciful to me. It's much better to be merciful. Definitely, but I'm not saying uh you know, disciplining a person as a elders not to be done. It has to be done. That's That's not a place for mercy 24:24 there. We have to be There must be grace and truth manifested in the church. It goes on to say here in Matthew 7:3, "Why do you look at a speck in your brother's eye, but you don't notice the log that is in your own eye?" 24:43 So, what is this log that is in the eye that prevents us from being able to remove the speck from somebody else's eye? Now, if there's a speck in somebody else's eye, what What Jesus say? Uh ignore it? You see a defect in a brother in your 24:59 church or in your family, do you are you to ignore it and say, "No, no, no, I'm not here to judge." No. If you love him, you'll want to help him. And how do you help him? You got to first get rid of the log inside your eye. You know, Jesus 25:15 used some extreme statements. Now, you know it's impossible to put a huge log inside your eye. Jesus used strong statements in the Sermon on the Mount like cutting out your hand and plucking out your eyes and camels trying to go through the eye 25:31 of a needle. And here's another strong extreme statement like that, you know, straining at a gnat and swallowing a camel and things like that. Here's another strong statement like that. Extreme statement, log inside your eye. Jesus 25:46 trying to highlight the seriousness of this error. And he says, "When you remove the log from your eye, then verse five, don't ignore the speck. Remember the the Lord didn't say don't just the Lord did not say ignore the 26:03 specks that there are in others. If you have a responsibility as a father or as an elder, you have to try and remove the specks in the eyes of those whom you have responsibility for. Yeah, we don't have to judge people who 26:17 are outside our sphere of responsibility, but within our sphere of responsibility, we do have a responsibility. We can't just hold back and keep quiet for the sake of popularity. There are elders like that. They'll never correct anybody because 26:29 they want to be popular. They want to have a reputation for being kind and good and merciful, and they don't care about the church being pure. They're just concerned about their own reputation for I'm I want to be known as 26:40 a gentle, kind, good elder. Well, you're absolutely unfit to be an elder then. In God's church, an elder must have grace and truth. He must love people so much that he wants to remove the from their eyes. But, he can't do it if he's just going to 26:56 judge by what his eyes see and his ears hear. He must have discernment, which he seeks from the Holy Spirit, and then he must get rid of the log from his eye. Once he's done that, it says in verse five, "Then you will see clearly to do 27:09 what?" To take the speck out of your brother's eye. So, Jesus did not teach here that you must leave that speck there forever. When you see your speck in your brother's eye, he says, "Don't just judge him for it. Get rid of your log, then you can remove 27:23 it." So, the ultimate purpose is to remove that speck from his eye. That defect that he does not see himself, perhaps. So, we come to what is this log in your own eye? Very simple. An unloving attitude towards your brother or sister. 27:42 An unloving attitude towards your husband or your wife. You're unfit to correct your husband or wife if you don't love her or seek to love her or him like Christ loved you. If you're unwilling to be merciful 28:01 like Christ was merciful to you, you're totally unfit to remove that speck. You can see numerous faults in your wife. Good. But, you're unfit to remove them. Maybe there are 10 15 specks in her eye. All that you say is true. 28:16 But, you're not the one capable of removing it because you're not seeking to love her like Christ loved the church. You're not even trying. I mean, none of us reach that height, but you're not even trying. It's not If it's not based on love, the 28:28 Lord says, "Leave it alone." You can't You remove it. You're unfit to remove it. You're only judging. The same way, if you see specks in your husband's eye, if you really want to remove them, first get rid of the log from your own eye. 28:44 But, the same with all the brothers and sisters you see in the church. You know, if all of us just took this this these three four verses these five verses in Matthew 7 seriously, it'll make a tremendous difference in your 28:57 home and in your church. But I'm sure we have heard these verses numerous times. But we have never taken it seriously. Let me show you another verse in in James in chapter 4. James chapter 4 where it says in verse 11, 29:22 "Don't speak against one another, brothers. When you speak against a brother or judge your brother, you're speaking against God's law. And you're judging God's law. And God's law is love your neighbor as yourself." That's what is the point here. 29:41 Love your neighbor as yourself. You know, he's speaks about that in chapter 2 about about that law being there. The speaking against the law of love, the law of liberty mentioned there. So, he who speaks against a brother 30:00 is judging his brother and is judging the law. Which says you must love your brother as you as you love yourself. And if you judge the law of God, then you're not a doer of the law. You're a judge. 30:18 There is only one judge. James 4:12. That's why Jesus said, "I judge nobody." Jesus discerned everybody who came to him. But didn't pass judgment on them. You remember when 30:34 the Pharisees brought the woman caught in adultery, they wanted to judge her immediately. And uh stone her to death. They had a They had a verse to quote. You know, people who judge others have always got a verse in the Bible to quote. They know 30:52 They're very sharp in their knowledge of scripture. And they according to this verse, according to this verse, I got to deal with this. Well, that's exactly how the Pharisees were. And Jesus was a far holier person than all 31:05 of them. And he's the one who gave Moses that law from heaven. That the woman who commits adultery must be stoned to death along with the one she committed adultery with. The Pharisees never brought the man who committed adultery. Probably he was a 31:23 friend of theirs. They left him alone. They just brought the woman. And Jesus who gave the law from heaven says, "He who is without sin, throw the first stone." And they all went away. They had to go away because Jesus was there. If any of 31:42 them had thrown a stone, Jesus would have exposed that man's secret sin. They knew that. And they quietly went away beginning with the eldest. And nobody was left. And then there was one person left without sin who could throw the stone 31:57 according to Jesus' own command. "He who is without sin, cast the first stone." Who was that? Jesus. He was without sin. He could have thrown the stone according to his own command that he gave Moses on Mount Sinai. But he didn't do it. 32:12 Why didn't he obey that command that he gave in the Old Testament law? Because the purpose of that law You need to understand the spirit. The whole purpose of that law was to show people how serious adultery was, not to get rid 32:25 of women who slipped up and failed. God doesn't carry stones in his hand to throw at sinners. None of us would be alive if that's the case. No, he came to save. And so, he tells the woman, "Has no one condemned you?" "No, Lord. Well, I do not condemn you." 32:43 Does that mean your sin is not serious? No, it is serious. Sister, don't sin again. That's what Jesus said. So, you see, there's an example for us of a person who gave a law, but he was merciful. And it's mercy triumphs over judgment. 33:02 Look at this verse in James chapter 2. And verse 12. He says that every law in scripture is based on James 2:8. "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." And if you live by that law, you're 33:20 doing well, he says. That's where you begin. And then he says, he's talking about partiality here in verse 9, "But if you show partiality, then you're committing a sin." That's another thing let me mention in passing that many elders I've seen 33:40 are sometimes strict towards others, but very partial when it concerns somebody in their own family. They always want to defend their wives and their children as if they don't do any wrong. They're very strict on 33:58 if somebody else is some other sister or some other child does something wrong, but they don't see the same thing wrong in their own children. I've seen numerous elders in CFC churches who don't see the faults in their own children, 34:13 but who see faults in other people's in other people's wives and their children. Well, then you are partial. And you're committing a sin. You're violating the law of love. With God, there is no partiality. All are the same. You got to hate your 34:30 father, mother, brother, sister, and your wife and children if you want to be a disciple. And only such a person is fit to be an elder. It says here, if you if you want to live according to the law, it says here 34:45 in verse James 2 verse 12, "So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty." The law of love mentioned in verse 8 is a law of liberty. That's the thing that will free us from sin. And then if you don't follow that, it says in 35:04 verse 13, this is a very important verse. James chapter 2 verse 13. Please, my dear brothers and sisters, please listen to this and let it be imprinted in your mind forever. James 2:13. God's judgment will be merciless 35:22 in the final day on those who have not shown any mercy to others. God's judgment will be absolutely merciless to all those people who have not shown mercy 35:40 to others. If you're not being merciful to your husband or your wife when they slip up somewhere, make a mistake and you jump down on them and say, "How many times I've told you this?" Sometimes we can be merciless to our towards our own 35:53 children. It's right to discipline our children, but there must be mercy there as well. And towards other believers, particularly if you think of some brother in the church whom you don't like, or some brother or sister against whom 36:06 you have a prejudice for some reason or the other, that's the person towards whom you're likely to be merciless. You won't be merciless towards someone who's very close to you, whom you like and love and you don't want to offend. 36:22 But think of your attitude towards some of those folks whom you don't like too much. Those are the ones towards whom you're likely to be merciless. And if that is the case, God's judgment in the final day, I say this to you in 36:35 Jesus' name. And remember this. Don't tell me in the day of judgment I didn't warn you. God's judgment will be absolutely merciless to anyone who has judged others without mercy. But it says here mercy must triumph over 36:52 judgment in my mind. These are very important verses in relation to what we are studying in Matthew chapter 7, a wrong attitude of judging others. What does it mean that mercy must triumph over judgment? It doesn't mean I have to ignore 37:07 the failure. If I if it's an area where I have responsibility, as I said, I cannot ignore it, but I've got to get rid of this log in my eye, this unloving attitude towards that person. Only then am I qualified to help him to remove the 37:21 speck. So, whenever thoughts of judgment come up in my mind, I must allow mercy also to come up and decide here what to do. Mercy in my mind must triumph over judgment. It does not mean 37:40 ignoring the fault. It does not mean that if your person over whom you have responsibility does something wrong, you forget about it. That's not the meaning of mercy. God is the most merciful person in the universe, but how strict he is in 37:54 punishing sin. He sends people to hell forever. Who sends people to hell forever? The most merciful person in the whole universe. So, it's not saying that there is no place for discipline, but mercy must always triumph over judgment. 38:12 So, those are a few thoughts concerning this this passage on judgment in Matthew chapter 7. And I as I said, it's those of us who are really serious about the commands in Matthew chapter 5 and 6 who are overcoming anger and overcoming 38:29 bitterness and overcoming seeking honor and all that and have come to a good life in Christ and doing the new covenant life, we are the ones who are most in danger of judging others who have not come to this new covenant life. 38:41 You know, Jesus spoke about the Pharisee, "Lord, I thank you I'm not like that man there." And we can have that attitude, too. "Lord, I thank you that I'm not like that uh visitor who's coming to our church. He doesn't seem to 38:51 have any light. Lord, I thank you I'm not like those people in those other churches. I thank you, Lord, that we are preaching better things than those other preachers." Maybe you're a preacher who does not take any money for your ministry. You seek to 39:03 follow Jesus and Paul's example. And then you can judge others who do take. Lord, I thank you I'm not like them, but Jesus said that the laborer is worthy of his hire. That if somebody gives a gift to that preacher and gives them a gift, that's 39:17 perfectly okay. It's perfectly okay for them to receive it. I'm not here to judge another person. I'm here to judge myself. Whatever standards God's told you to keep, live by that. Paul himself never received any money from people, but he 39:30 did occasionally. But he didn't ever judge Peter, who was probably being supported all the time by other people's gifts. He never judged him. That's That's the balance. God's called you to live by a certain standard, live at that standard, but 39:42 leave other people to live by the standard God's called them to. Don't judge them. Very, very, very important. You know, in in our churches, for example, we have 150 elders or so in all of our churches, CFC churches. Not one of them 39:58 takes a salary. None of them are paid for their service to the church. Everyone serves freely, exactly like Jesus and Paul did. And uh if somebody gives them gifts, they're welcome to receive it, but they're not dependent on that. 40:12 And but we are in danger of judging other people who maybe receive regular gifts. I 100 I'm 100% against a salary. The serving the Lord is not a a job for which we get a salary. It's right to receive gifts, but it's wrong 40:28 to receive a salary. Jesus didn't offer a salary to the disciples. But the danger here is that if God's called us to live by certain standard of judging others in this area and any other area like that, let's be very, very careful. Let's get rid of this 40:44 unloving attitude in our mind against anyone. That's the fundamental thing here. And then here's the contrast. I spoke about the importance of discernment. As soon as Jesus finished speaking about the section on judgment, don't judge, 41:01 then he goes on in Matthew 7:6 saying, "Don't give what is holy to the dogs." Dogs can't appreciate what is holy. But how are you to know whether someone is spiritually speaking like a dog? Don't you have to judge? See the balance Jesus uh 41:21 speaks here. On one side, don't judge, but at the same time discern. Is that guy a dog? Is that guy a swine? Verse 6. Spiritually speaking, I mean. I'm not here to call anybody a dog or a swine. No, not at all. We don't call anybody 41:36 names. But we're talking about people who don't appreciate spiritual things. You can't give a holy thing to a dog. You can't throw pearls before swine. They don't appreciate it. So, the point is, here's a person who does not appreciate spiritual things. 41:54 Why thrust it on them? They must come to a place of need. Yeah, that's that's very, very important. Though we we're called to preach the gospel everywhere, but we need to be discerning. Jesus didn't go around sharing the 42:07 gospel with people who have no value for it. No. And so, we see here, don't give what is holy to the dogs. That's a balance out in what we read in verse one. Don't judge, but discern whether the who's a dog and a swine, and 42:22 who should be, spiritually speaking, you don't call anybody by that name. Discern those who don't have any value for spiritual things. And don't give your give the gospel out in a foolish way, but they'll just trample that underfoot. I've seen people just 42:40 stand on the street and give out hundreds and hundreds of tracts. I've seen that in India. To everybody who comes down the road. Uh personally, I don't believe Jesus would have done that. Um he was always discerning. And I've seen on that same 42:56 uh on that road where they distributed these tracts, hundreds of tracts, or lots of tracts is lying on the ground. People have so have seen it and throw thrown it away. Was that a good way of using spreading God's word? 43:10 I don't believe in that. I've personally given out numerous tracts to others in my life, but not in an indiscriminate way. It says, "Don't give what is holy to the dogs. Don't give uh don't throw your pearls before swine." 43:24 So those are the nine wrong attitudes. We conclude with that one. Don't judge others. And then Jesus has some concluding statements. The main teaching here is over. And now here's some concluding statements. 43:42 Because the standard here is so high, beginning with Matthew 5:3, "Blessed are the poor in spirit." And all the, you know, we saw the wrong the wrong attitudes in verses 3 to 11. All the wrong attitudes that we are to beware of. 44:01 What are they? Uh the right attitudes first. Poor in spirit, mourning for sin, gentleness thirsting for righteousness, being merciful being uh pure in heart being a peacemaker 44:21 and being willing to suffer for righteousness' sake and for Jesus' sake. Then we come to the right attitudes. Number one Sorry, now we come to the wrong attitudes. Anger sinful sexual lust, lying vengeance selectiveness in love 44:38 seeking man's honor, love of money, anxiety, and finally judging others. Now, the standard is so high that we say, "How in the world am I going to achieve the standard, Lord?" Here's the answer. The Lord does not leave 44:55 this message without an answer. Those who are really wanting this life at any cost. "Lord, I want this life." This inner life, this godly life. This life life of loving God with all our heart and loving one another in the church as Christ 45:11 loved us and loving our neighbor as ourselves. I want it. Well, you got to ask. You cannot produce it. It is not a standard I see and I try to climb up to it and imitate. No. I have to ask. Ask and it'll be given to you. Matthew chapter 7 verse 7. Here's 45:31 the answer. Seek and you will find. Knock will be opened to you. It's those who are desperate, who I who want this life. And he he who asks receives and he goes on to say, "If you being evil, verse 11, know how to give good gifts to your 45:47 children, how much more will your heavenly Father give what is good to those who ask him?" If you see that everything you studied so far, these nine right attitudes and the nine wrong attitudes are really what you want to 45:58 have and avoid then you say it's good don't you think your heavenly father will give it to you? And this verse, how much more will your heavenly father give what is good to those who ask him? The similar verse in Luke chapter 11 46:14 and verse 13 is, how much more will your heavenly father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him? Compare scripture with scripture and you'll see what we need to ask is for the Holy Spirit. That's the conclusion of the Sermon on 46:28 the Mount. Are you driven by this life that you want to live? Brother and sister, you'll never get there unless you ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit. You can try and try and try and try. You'll fail and fail and fail and fail 46:43 and fail. And don't look for a once for all experience of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 5:18 says, "Be being filled with the Holy Spirit." That's a literal translation of that verse. In other words, be continuously filled with the 46:59 Holy Spirit. All the time. Those rivers must be flowing out from my from my innermost being and I got a hunger and thirst for more and more because when we grow our capacity increases. When I first come to the Lord, it says 47:16 I I lift up the cup of salvation to the Lord and the Lord fills me with the Holy Spirit, but it's a cup. And I'm filled. But if I take up the cross every day and walk with the Lord that my capacity increases and my cup becomes like a 47:29 bucket. And I pour this water in the cup into a bucket and boy, there's hardly any water in it. I need to pray again, "God, will fill me." And God fills my bucket now. And I'm filled. A little more new new capacity and filled with the Holy 47:45 Spirit. And then I keep taking up the cross and following Jesus and the bucket becomes a tub. And I pour the water of the bucket into the tub. There's hardly anything in it. "Lord, fill me again." And the same process again. And then I 48:00 pray, "Now Lord, please increase my capacity. I want to take up the cross and follow you." And the bucket becomes like a lake. And that's filled again, and the lake becomes like a river. And then many rivers. 48:20 So, the Apostle Paul, when he was filled with the Holy Spirit right at the beginning of his life, and when he was filled with the Spirit at the end of his life, there was a vast difference. In both cases, he was filled with the Spirit. 48:30 But, the capacity was so much more. So, we keep on asking, and we keep on seeking, and we keep on knocking, "Lord, I want more and more and more and more of the Holy Spirit's power." And believing. There's only two things here. 48:48 Ask with thirst, and believe that your heavenly Father will give. And finally, in Jesus gives a concluding uh statement here about how we are to treat other people. It's a beautiful verse, Matthew 7:12. Treat people in the same way 49:07 you want them to treat you. That's a lovely word. How do you want people to speak to you? Do you like anybody speaking to you harshly? Well, don't speak to other people like that. Do you want people to be considerate 49:27 of your needs when they live with you or deal with you? Be considerate of others as well. Don't think only in terms of yourself. It's a It's a lovely verse to teach our children from a very young age. Treat others the way you want to be 49:42 treated. Do you like anybody yelling at you? No. Well, don't yell at others. You you to correct people, do it gently. I'm not saying we shouldn't correct, but do it gently. Everything Imagine if you ask yourself the way you're treating 50:00 others, is that the way I would like to be treated? That's a great area for us to judge ourselves constantly right until the time Jesus comes. And he Jesus says the entire When he said the law and the prophets in Matthew 7:12, he's talking 50:13 about the Old Testament. The entire Old Testament, he says, can be summed up in this law. Just treat others the way you want to be treated yourself. In human relationships. And then he concludes with three parables related 50:32 to the Sermon on the Mount. What he's saying is in He talks about a narrow gate and a narrow way. And then he speaks about good trees and bad trees. And a rock foundation and a sandy foundation. Three parables 50:51 related to the Sermon on the Mount. So, the first one is a gate and he's You could read it like this. Jesus is saying in Matthew 7:13, "Now, this standard that I proclaim to you is a very high standard. And it's a very narrow gate. 51:11 And you can ignore this and just say, "I've accepted Christ and I'm going to heaven." That's a wide gate. A lot of people are going to destruction that way. Who don't take seriously the life of Christ. What I've proclaimed to you is the way 51:27 to life. Because it's not only a gate that leads to life, Jesus said in verse 14, "The gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life. The gate leads on to a way. That's how I get to life. I receive Christ into my life. I'm born again, 51:45 that's the gate. But that's not the end. There's a whole way, let us run with patience the race that is set before us that leads to life. See, this is the problem with so much of Bible teaching. They two truths and one is ignored and 52:01 the other is emphasized. Some ignore the way and say, "It's the gate, brother. The main thing is to come come accept the Lord accept the Lord and then relax." There are others who say, "You got to deny yourself. You got to deny 52:16 yourself." Well, where do you can end up with the the non-Christian religions that talk about denying yourself. In yoga, for example. No, you begin with the gate. You have to be born again and then there is a way. That's the balance. There is a 52:30 narrow gate and a narrow way and a good church and a good elder will teach the narrow gate and the narrow way cuz that's what Jesus said leads to life. And there are very few who find it. That's why I don't believe mega churches are preaching the narrow 52:46 gate and the narrow way. How in the world you get so many tens of thousands of people? That's a broad gate and a broad way leading to destruction. They're probably just proclaiming a gate and wearing off and not even the gate. 52:57 The gate itself is made very wide. Well, that leads to destruction. The gate is wide, verse 13, and the way is broad that leads to destruction. If you do proclaim the narrow gate, which is repent and commit your life to the 53:10 lordship of Christ, that is the narrow gate, then continue to preach the way after that that leads to life. Very, very important. And that's where Matthew 5 and 6 and 7 is very important. What Jesus saying is, "What I proclaim to you 53:25 is a narrow gate and a narrow way that will lead you to life." And then he uses the example of false prophets who come along, verse 15. Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing in the context of the Sermon on the 53:41 Mount who will say, "Oh, it's not important to keep all these things. Haven't you guys accepted Christ? That's it." Uh if you can keep these things, keep it. There are some false prophets who say all this is not for Christians. This is 53:53 all for the Jews. Anything that doesn't fit their own understanding, they throw it into the Jewish wastepaper basket. So, these are the false prophets who say, "No, no, no, you don't have to worry about it all this. You don't have to take seriously that 54:06 Jesus said if you get angry and continue like that, verse 25:22, you can go to hell. Or you lust after lust after a woman and you continue like that, you can go to hell, Matthew 5:29. No, no, no, you don't have to take it all seriously. 54:17 These are the false prophets." Be careful who say, "No, there's no need to take this seriously. You are to be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect, Matthew 5:48." False prophets are those who devalue everything that Jesus said here. 54:32 Beware of the false prophets. They'll come to you in sheep's clothing. Their fundamental doctrine, God is a trinity, and Christ died for the sins of the world, he rose again, he's coming back. These things they'll be right. 54:42 That's the sheep's clothing. But inwardly they are ravenous wolves. They're after your money. They want you to be their followers. But you will know them by their fruit. Look at their lives. Are they lovers of money? Are they people who want to control you? 54:59 By their fruit you know them. That guy is a false prophet. He wants to control me. He loves money. I'm not going to listen to him. Cuz grapes cannot be gathered from thorn bushes. I wish every Christian would listen to these words and we'd be protected from 55:13 the thousands of false prophets that are roaming around in Christendom in the world today. A good tree, verse 18, cannot produce bad fruit. And a bad tree cannot produce good fruit. He's comparing false prophets to the true prophets. 55:30 And a good tree and a bad tree that does not produce fruit will be one day cut down and thrown into the fire, verse And then he goes on to speak about people who in the same subject about false prophets. They may say Jesus is Lord. 55:48 Lord, Lord, they'll say. But and they there many gifts. You know the false prophets can have many gifts like prophecy. Verse 22. Casting out demons. And doing not one or two miracles, but many miracles. Now, how many people 56:02 believe that a person who prophesies in Jesus' name, casts out demons in Jesus' name verse 22, and performs many miracles in Jesus' name may still be a false prophet. Very few believe that. Most Christians would sit with their mouth open and 56:21 wonder in a public meeting where such people claim to do these miracles and in front of television programs saying, "Wow, what a man of God. I'm not fooled." No. By their fruit you shall know them. Is he a lover of money? Is he after your 56:35 money? Is he trying to control your life? Is he preaching the way of the cross, taking up the cross every day? Is he preaching the sermon on the mount? If he's not preaching all this, I say he's a false prophet. I don't care 56:48 what doctrine he's holding on to. Don't just be fooled by the fact that he says Lord, Lord. Not everyone who says Lord, Lord will enter God's kingdom, but he who does the will of the Father. A true prophet is one who tells you to 57:03 do the will of God in your life. Not just rely on the fact that once you accepted Christ into your heart. There is a way that leads to life and the one day when these people stand before the Lord, it's not going to be one or two. 57:17 Jesus said, "Many." Verse 22. Many, many, many. I don't know, hundreds, thousands will stand before the Lord and say, "Lord, Lord, we prophesied in your name. We preached. We cast out demons. We did many miracles, not one or two. And you know, and we did 57:33 it in your name. And the Lord will say to them, "I never knew you. I never had any intimate relationship with you." That's going to be the important thing in the final day. Get away. Go to hell. Because there was sin in your life. You 57:49 who practice sin. So, what is going to be the important in the final day? Not how many miracles you did. Not how much you preached. Not how many demons you cast out. But, did you do the will of God? 58:07 Verse 21. Did you stay away from sin? Verse 23. Please remember these. This is so important to emphasize this in the last days. And finally, the last parable Jesus uses is about a man who hears all these words. 58:25 You heard many things in these 10 messages that we've spoken on the Sermon on the Mount, growth into Christ-likeness. And you heard it all. And you don't seek to do them. You don't have a desire to live according to the standard, to seek for 58:42 the power of the Holy Spirit. If you want to do it, or you don't want to do it. If you If you're really eager to do it and seek for the power of the Holy Spirit, you're building your house on a rock. And whatever storm may come, even the 58:56 final judgment, it will not fall. But, if you hear all this, and say, "Well, it's not important." You understood it, but you don't seek to obey it. He does not act on them. Verse 26. He's a foolish man who builds on sand. 59:16 And one day, even though the house looks so great for so many years, and it looks a grand building, one day the final judgment will destroy it, and it will fall, and great will be its fall. I think of that word in Revelation 17 59:31 and 18, the fall of Babylon will be great. Here's a picture of the true church and the false church. Two buildings. One built on the teachings of the Sermon on the Mount, built on the rock. That will remain. The other Babylon 59:47 built on sand because it ignores all that's taught in Matthew 5, 6, and 7. Its fall will be great. Compare it with Revelation 17 and 18. Revelation 18 particularly is fallen is Babylon. There it is. So, the important thing is 1:00:05 that we have a faith that leads to works of obedience. That's what James says in chapter 2, faith without works is dead. So, please remember that as you read this. And one closing word. Matthew 7 verse 28 and 29. 1:00:25 When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at his teaching. He was teaching them as one having authority. I think this is a Living Bible which says there that they were the crowds realized that he was living what he spoke. 1:00:39 And that's very important, dear brothers, to all who preach the word. People must see that you're living what you speak. We're not supposed to speak what we're not seeking to live. Acts 1:1, Jesus did and then taught. I mean, that's what brings authority 1:00:57 into our ministry. So, let's keep all that we have heard in our mind and go and listen through these messages again. And ask God to speak to your heart beyond what you heard from me. The Holy Spirit can speak so much more. 1:01:16 And may God enable us all not only to walk this narrow way. That's one part, but to bring forth fruit and to build the church, to do your part, whatever part it is, to build the church on this rock, to build your home 1:01:35 on this rock, where you encourage one another, where you get rid of the logs from your eye towards one another, and lead one another to a godly life. May God help us. Let's pray. Heavenly Father, 1:01:57 there's so much more in these three chapters that I believe the Holy Spirit wants to teach each of us. Help us to have ears to hear each one. We know that all these words will come back to us one day in the day of judgment when we stand before you. 1:02:16 So, Lord, we want to take it seriously. In Jesus' name. Amen.
