0:19 I've been thinking of late how much we in seeking after holiness, which has been our emphasis, could be depending upon our flesh 0:36 more than upon the Holy Spirit. And that could be the reason why we never seem to break through. We never seem to come into that life that the Bible speaks about. We're all familiar with the verse that 0:55 we often quote in this church, Romans 6:14. Sin shall not be master over you. For we are not under law, but under grace. Now, I think 1:18 some of us read it like this. Sin should not be master over you. You see the difference? Sin should not be master over you is the way I think most 1:34 or many of us read it. That is a command. Sin should not be master over you. Sin shall not be master over you is a promise. And the difference between a promise and 1:52 a commandment is a promise is what God promises to do for us. And a commandment is what we have to do. And I really believe that that is the problem with some who are still struggling 2:11 and defeated. And the rest of the verse makes it more clear. Sin shall not be master over you because you're not under law. That means you're not going to be trying to overcome sin by your own struggle. 2:29 That's the meaning of law. But you're under grace. The grace is going to help you to overcome sin. I want you to think about that. I want to speak especially to those who, like Jesus said, 2:49 "Come to me, those who are weary and heavy laden." Are there people here who are weary and heavy laden after years of struggling to overcome sin, whatever is, you know, the Bible speaks about the sin which so easily 3:07 besets us? And I think all of us can think of one sin that very easily besets us. It could be different with different people. It could be anger, very often. 3:25 It could be sexually lustful thinking or sexually lustful habits or it could be discouragement, which is also a sin, because the Bible says we have to rejoice in the Lord always. So, 3:43 think of that which sin which so easily besets you. You know, in Hebrews 12 it says about the sin which so easily besets us, which we must cast off if we are to run the race looking unto Jesus. 4:00 And so, if you're weary and heavy laden, not if you say, "Yeah, it'd be a good thing if I could get victory. I mean, I'm not all that keen on it, but I'm not really weary and heavy laden, but I think it'd be a good idea 4:15 if I could get victory over sin." I'm not speaking to those. Jesus is not inviting such people. He's inviting those who are weary and heavy laden, or like I say, sick and tired of being defeated, defeated, defeated, and wondering why. 4:34 You've been trying to claim Romans 6:14, but reading it as sin should not have dominion over you. Well, if you're weary and heavy laden, there's the Lord invites us to come to him. The other person the Lord invites to come to him is 4:50 uh the first verse is Matthew 11:28. The second one is John 7:37. "If any man thirst, let him come to me." See, those are the two very important verses. Who does Jesus invite to come to him? Not everybody. 5:09 Those who are weary and heavy laden and because they are weary and heavy laden, they're thirsting. Because they are dry. Thirsty is a man who's dry and he's longing for a drink of water. And then in that passage, Jesus is 5:28 referring to the Holy Spirit as a the water is a picture of the Holy Spirit. So, those who are longing for the power and fullness of the Holy Spirit, and not just longing, but thirsting, Jesus says, "Come to me." Not those who say, "Well, I think it'd 5:43 be a good thing if I could speak in tongues or be filled with the Spirit. I mean, it's not great urgency. Maybe next year sometime. And I've got other things to do. I can't be seeking this all the time." He's not inviting you. It's those who 6:01 are thirsty. So, it's only a certain category of people I discovered through the years who really enter into this spirit-filled life of overcoming and not only overcoming, but empowerment for service. It's open to all of us, 6:21 but not everybody enters in. Most Christians never, never enter into this life even before they die. That's sad, isn't it? I mean, if that was the Old Covenant, I could understand that. Then they couldn't enter into it in the 6:38 Old Covenant because that's there was no such opportunity under the Old Covenant. They were under law. They had to just keep struggling till they died. Never get victory and die. And the best of them, whether it's Moses, Elijah, John the Baptist, 6:56 he died wondering, "Is Jesus the Messiah?" in prison. Uh that wasn't the best way to die, anyway. David died not forgiving someone. Moses died, and his last act was an act of disobedience to God, striking the 7:15 rock. But they were under law. But when you think of people in the New Covenant, people like Paul towards the end of his life saying, "I've finished my course. I fought a good fight. I've kept the faith, and there's only a crown 7:30 of righteousness waiting for me now. No regrets." I mean, you can't say that Paul didn't wish that he had been converted when he was five or 10. He was converted when he was 30. So, how does he say, "I finished my course"? 7:49 Can you live as a non-Christian, not only a non-Christian, Paul was against Christ for 30 years, killing believers and imprisoning them, and none of us have been so bad, and mess up 30 years of his life like this and still say, "I finished my 8:08 course"? See, that's the wonderful thing about grace. That God, who sees the future, it's very difficult to explain this. Because in mathematics, if there's a big problem you're solving, step one, two, three, four, five, six, 8:27 seven, all the way to 15 steps before you get the answer. If you make a mistake at step two, you'll never get the right answer. If you make a mistake at step 14, you won't get the right answer. So, we think that if I messed up my life 8:43 somewhere earlier on in my life, I can never fulfill God's will. And God doesn't work according to mathematical rules. Because if that were the case, Paul's 30 years, first 30 years was wipe out. How did he finish the course? 9:00 Think about that. He says in 2 Timothy 4, saying, "I finished my course. I've kept the faith." The reason is that God, in his foreknowledge, he looks into the future, and he knows that many years we are in ignorance. 9:20 And this wonderful verse, which you I've often quoted, and if you don't know it, you must learn it today. Acts 17:30. Don't forget the reference. Acts 17:30. The times of ignorance God overlooks. 9:39 He overlooks the times of ignorance and commands people now to repent. That's a tremendously liberating verse because it not only refers to the times when I was ignorant 9:59 about how my sins could be forgiven. Maybe for years I thought uh I'm going to church, living a good life, I'm a Christian. That's what I thought for 19 and 1/2 years. Once in a while I would say, "Lord Jesus, come into my heart." But I was 10:17 never sure. I lived 19 and 1/2 years like that. And then I was forgiven. So, I was ignorant. And I'm very thankful that all the stupid things I did in those 19 and 1/2 years, God says, "I will look at 10:37 Not only I forgive it, but I overlook it." And then I think of the years after I was born again. When I was ignorant, not of how to be forgiven, that I learned already. Now I was ignorant of how to live in the new covenant, how to 10:54 live an overcoming life. How could I know if nobody taught me? Uh and it took years to study it myself in the scriptures. Or to find godly people who could tell me what the new covenant was, that there is a possibility of a life of victory. 11:13 So, in a sense, those were also years of ignorance at stage two. That and God overlooks that. I tell you I'm extremely thankful. To me anyway, it's a great encouragement that God overlooks the times of ignorance when I was 11:32 ignorant of forgiveness of sins and the times of ignorance when I didn't understand what the new covenant was all about or how victory over sin was essential. Not a sort of extra which you can have if you want or don't want if you don't 11:46 want. It's like the ice cream at the end of the meal. If you're afraid of diabetes, don't eat it. If you want to eat it, you can eat it. It's not optional. It's essential. But I was ignorant. And I think many of you will 12:04 uh you know, feel that that's been your experience, too. Here's a liberating verse. Not a verse which encourages us to keep on sinning. Those who take this verse and say, "Oh well, God will keep on overlooking my times of ignorance, so I can keep on 12:23 doing what I like." For you, there's another verse. And that's Hebrews 10 and verse 26. For those who want to take advantage of God's mercy and grace, it's not Acts 17:30, but 12:39 Hebrews 10:26. If we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, then there is no more sacrifice for sin, but a certain terrifying expectation of 12:55 judgment. When it says in verse 26, we Well, the person who wrote it is obviously a spirit-filled believer, otherwise he wouldn't be commanded to write the book of Hebrews. He includes himself. It's not just you people. If we 13:12 go on sinning willfully, is it possible for a person who's once filled with the spirit still to come to a place where he begins to sin willfully? It's go on. It's not one willful sin. I think all of us after we are born again have 13:29 done some willful sins, but go on sinning willfully. There's a difference between the present continuous of going on doing something. It's a warning is for such people. That means those who want to take advantage of God's grace and say, "Well, it doesn't 13:46 matter, you know, if we sin because the blood of Jesus will cleanse us." You know, it says here that such a person, verse 29, last part, he has regarded the blood of Christ as something unclean. Boy, how do you regard the blood of Christ as 14:05 something unclean? Or the proper translation of that word would be common. Common means something easily available like tap water. Doesn't matter if my hands get dirty because water is cheap. Or we could read it like this, he has 14:21 treated the blood of Christ as something cheap. Because he says it doesn't matter if we sin. I'll tell you honestly, if you have known the Lord for 2 years and your attitude is, "Well, it doesn't matter if we sin." I only want to say that you're on very 14:40 dangerous ground. Very dangerous ground of ground underneath your feet can sink. You better get away from that place. But if you are sincere and I believe basically it's sincerity that God looks for. And if you are sincere, you don't have 15:00 to feel condemned by such verses, never. Because God loves honest people, those who are sincerely seeking. To me, one of the greatest commendations that Jesus gave There are a number of commendations that Jesus gave to different people, unbelievers, by the 15:13 way. We never think of commending an unbeliever because we think there's nothing There can be nothing good in an unbeliever, but let me tell you, there was an unbelieving military man, a Roman centurion, whom God commended 15:27 saying, "Boy, I've never seen such faith in Israel." An unbeliever had more faith in Jesus than all those Jews who studied the Bible. A military Roman soldier, when he looked at Jesus on the cross, 15:47 said, "This is the son of God." And the Pharisees called him the devil, Beelzebub. So, knowing the Bible is not the answer. But here is one of the another commendation to an unbeliever which is very important. John, chapter 1. 16:06 Here's an unbeliever called Nathanael. He's not a Christian. He's not a disciple of Jesus. In fact, he despises anybody who comes from Nazareth. When Philip came to him and said, "We found Jesus, the Messiah." 16:25 Verse 45, Luke John 1:45. Philip found Nathanael told him, "We found the one who Moses spoke about, the Messiah. He's come from Nazareth." He said, "Nazareth? Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Have you ever thought of that? I mean, 16:46 I've never heard of that said about any town in India. Can any good thing come out of there? I mean, people say that about some races. Can anything good come out of people of that race? People despise certain caste. People 17:01 saying, "Can anything good come out of that caste?" But a town, can anything good come out of that town? That is how Nathanael was. And Jesus I'm sure Jesus sensed in his spirit what 17:19 Nathanael was saying because later on he says Nathanael in the field Jesus told tells him in verse 48, "Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree." How is that? The Holy Spirit showed him. Holy Spirit showed Jesus 17:37 Nathanael under the fig tree. Maybe he was praying, but despising those who come from Nazareth. Jesus knew that. And Jesus says, "There is a man verse 47 in whom there is no hypocrisy." I when I read that, I said, "Lord, 17:59 if you can give that one testimony about me, I mean, to say about me, Lord, that you never found such great faith in India. I don't want that. I don't expect that. I don't because I don't think it's true. But if you can say about me this, 18:18 that there's a man in whom there's no hypocrisy, Lord, I want that. Because there's not a When I say when the Lord says there's nobody like who's got faith like this in India or the world, that's a comparison. And I don't want that. I don't want to 18:31 compare myself to anyone. But when the Lord says there's no hypocrisy in that person, that's not a comparison. That can be said about all of us. Do you want that? I long for it. I long that every moment of my life uh the Lord will say, 18:50 "There's no hypocrisy in him." Even when you're defeated. Nathanael was not having victory over sin. He was not He hadn't received the Holy Spirit. He was not born again. But he could be free from hypocrisy. And that's why God could lead him 19:05 further and bring him to salvation. Because Nathanael said in verse 49, "You're the son of God." He was saved. So, I want to say that as an introduction that if you are free from hypocrisy and you're sincere, that's what God looks 19:22 for. Say, "Lord, I don't want to take advantage of your grace, but I'm not going to live in condemnation over the past. I believe that the times of my ignorance you overlook, but now you are commanding me to repent, to turn around or in other words, to 19:38 turn around and take my life seriously." I want to ask you, brothers and sisters, have you had good friends who have come and told you frankly something wrong with you. That you crack some dirty jokes which are not good. 19:57 Has anyone told you frankly some habit of yours of despising people or whatever it is which is not good. Thank God for such friends. Now, if you have such You see things wrong in yourself like 20:16 that. Do you Are you honest enough to acknowledge it? And say, "Yes, Lord, I want to turn from that." And anything like that that either your husband or wife perhaps told you because they love you so much. Say, "You know, this thing is not really 20:32 right." Or you've seen it in yourself. Repent means you want to turn from what you know It You cannot turn from what you don't know is sin in your life. It is a great liberating thing that you don't have to turn from what I see as 20:49 sin in my life. Repentance is you turn from what you see as sin in your life. If you're in the first standard, then what you see as wrong at your level. If you're in the eighth standard, what you see as wrong at your level. And 21:05 if you're in the PhD level, then what you see as wrong at your level. And it's different levels. So, repentance means different things depending on how much you're mature. If you're a new believer, repentance is very little. 21:18 Repentance for me is at a very high level. Because there's subtle things that God shows me which even last year I didn't know were un-Christ-like. So, the at the higher levels of spiritual growth, you're not thinking of 21:35 sin which the world calls sin. You're thinking of un-Christ-like attitudes and un-Christ-like thought patterns. Um so, God does not God overlooks our times of ignorance, but he commands us to repent. 21:54 To repent of what you know to be wrong in your life. So, you turn around. And what do you turn around to do now? Repentance means a turning around. Now, you turn around to seek for the power of the Holy Spirit. To seek for grace. 22:11 The Holy Spirit is called the spirit of grace. See, in It's a prophecy in Zechariah chapter 12. Zechariah chapter 12 and verse 10. It says, "I will pour out on the house of David on the inhabitants of Jerusalem 22:30 the spirit of grace and supplication." Supplication means specific request. The spirit that works in me to cry out and ask God for the power of His Spirit and fills me with the spirit of grace. Pours out the spirit of grace upon me. 22:47 He makes me cry out and then fills me. It's wonderful. He creates in me the longing and then satisfies it. It's wonderful to know that. You know, when God created man, he created man with 23:05 what we know as hunger and thirst. Imagine if God created hunger and thirst in a man, but there was no food in the world and no water. That would be torture. But when God created Adam with hunger, he created so many fruits that he could 23:24 eat in the garden. So, what I learned from that is that God who creates a hunger in me is also made provision for satisfying that hunger. This is what I see in the Garden of Eden right at the beginning of creation. And it's a lesson 23:37 for us to remember that God created Adam with hunger and provided food to satisfy the hunger. And if God creates a hunger in me, he has already made provision. Adam doesn't have to go and hunt for, "Where can I satisfy my hunger now?" 23:56 He didn't put Adam in a desert. Go search for food. He placed him in a garden. Food was all around him. But God was not going to pluck the fruit and put it into Adam's mouth. He had to go and take it. And I want to say that to you that if 24:13 God created you like Adam, he created you with a hunger for something more than you have right now spiritually, you can be absolutely sure that he hasn't put you in a desert. He brought you to CFC and CFC is no desert. 24:30 He has allowed you to come to a place where you can have plenty of food to satisfy that hunger. But it's not going to be He's not going to spoon-feed you. He's not going to push food down Adam's throat saying, "Hey, I'm going to 24:47 satisfy your hunger." No. He creates the hunger. The opportunity to satisfy it is there, but Adam has to reach out and take the food. And you have to reach out and say, "Lord, I thirst for this life. Life in the Holy Spirit. This struggling 25:04 to satisfy my hunger myself is not working. This struggling to prevent sin from having mastery over me is not working. I want to learn the secret of life in the Holy Spirit. Now, this is 25:23 in many places. You know, the other day we looked at Romans chapter 8. Where Paul comes to that place of wretchedness in Romans 7 and says the two things he says. One, Romans 7:18, "I know 25:40 that nothing good dwells in my flesh." What does he mean by saying, "Nothing good dwells in my flesh"? Now, we can think of many aspects of the flesh. "There's nothing good dwells in my flesh" means all types of dirty thoughts 25:56 and dirty language and all that. But that is not what Paul is speaking of here. Sometimes we read one sentence and apply it ourselves. Let's read, like I always say, read slowly, but read in context. 26:13 Read what comes before and after. Okay. Um First of all, Romans 7:18. Romans 7:16. First of all, I agree with the law, 16, confessing it is good. I agree that God's standards are the best for me. But in my flesh 26:33 dwells nothing good, verse 18. Not talking about dirty thoughts and bad language. Here is the thing that's dwelling in his flesh. I wish to live this life, but I can't do it. The wishing is present, but the doing is not. 26:51 That is what he says is nothing good in my flesh. He's not talking about dirty thoughts. He's not talking about bad language. This wretched thing that the flesh wants to do something, but can't do it. Again, it wants to do something, but 27:06 can't do it. Do you understand Romans 7:18 now? In my flesh, nothing good, meaning I want to do it, but I can't do it. Paul said that's his first confession. Then he goes on in verse 24 to say, "When some such a wretched condition 27:24 that I'm in, how will I be ever delivered? Who will set me free? Who will bring me out of this wretched thing?" Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then, Romans 8 verse two, another law. 27:43 Praise the Lord. Another law from the law of Moses. The law of the spirit. The law of Moses is law. The law of the spirit is grace. This is the difference between law and grace. And you go back to Romans 6:14, "Sin shall not" promise, not should not, "Sin 28:02 shall not rule over you because you're not under the law of Moses, but you're under the law of the spirit now, grace." And he says, "The law of the spirit, verse two, is life in Christ Jesus." The law of the spirit was a written code of 28:18 commandments. That's the law of Moses. 613 commandments in the Old Testament. We can say that was a tree of knowledge of good and evil. Murder, evil. Honoring father and mother, good. 28:36 Adultery, evil. And uh keeping the Sabbath, good. Taking God's name in vain, evil. Accepting God alone as the true God, good. It was a tree of knowledge of good and evil. 28:53 Offering sacrifice for your sin, good. And many other laws, you know, evil. And now we come to grace, which is the tree of life. Where Adam could have just reached out and taken that tree of life. 29:13 This is different. This is the difference between law of Moses and the law of the spirit. The law of the spirit is The law of Moses symbolizing the tree of knowledge of good and evil. It was a big tree of 613 things you should do or not do. Now, we come to 29:30 the tree of life, which is the life of Christ. No laws here. It's life. And he says, "This law of the Holy Spirit contrasted the life of Jesus has set me free. That other law could never set me free. 29:49 I try to keep some commandments, can't keep some, then some I keep, then afterwards I can't keep. It's an endless life like that, but now the law of life in Christ Jesus has set me free. It's so different. It's so different. 30:05 You probably heard me, I've used the example of leprosy many times. Because in the Old Testament, leprosy is the whole commandment on leprosy in Leviticus chapter 14. Leukemia was a picture of sin in the Old Testament. It's one of the one sickness in the Old 30:22 Testament that is to characterize sin. So there were laws for the lepers in the Old Testament. There were no laws for people who had tuberculosis or cancer or things like that, but leprosy because that was a picture of sin. 30:37 Because it is very obvious the result of it in a person. You could see a person, there's a leper. You can't look at a man and say that he's got cancer or he's got tuberculosis. But leper was obvious. So leprosy is a picture of sin. 30:51 And you've heard me use this illustration and I like to use it because it's very relevant to what I'm just saying. What happens to people with leprosy is gradually they lose sensation. You get a little patch here. And you don't feel anything there. 31:11 You poke it, you don't feel anything. Sensation is gone. And the thing about leprosy, like sin, is it spreads. It doesn't stay there. It's inside. It goes into different parts. You know, it's not leprosy that eats away your nose. 31:28 You don't feel sensation and because of that gradually you can get injured and all and and you can't do anything about it. Like you've heard me use the example of the the leprosy person who was sleeping at night in the morning he found one of 31:41 his toes missing. Because a rat has eaten it. He didn't feel anything. That's how bad lack of sensation can be. That's why pain is the greatest blessing in the body. Because pain immediately tells you something is wrong. A mosquito 31:55 is there or a rat's biting you or pain is a blessing. If you didn't have pain, you'd lose your legs and all types of things. And internally, pain is a blessing. It indicates something is wrong. Uh so, leprosy, person loses that 32:11 sensation. So when people lose sensation, they can touch a hot plate and burn their hands. They can lose their toes at night and all types of things. So they have to have a lot of rules. People make rules for people with 32:25 leprosy. When you see a hot stove, don't touch it. Check whether it's on or not. Check with something else whether it's hot. Laws. And when you go to bed at night, check your feet if there are any thorns there. How many of us check our feet at night 32:43 if there are thorns there? Nobody. No need to. You know why? Because you got life in your feet. That poor leper doesn't have life in his feet. Because he doesn't have life in his feet, he needs a law which says check up in case some thorns 33:02 got into your foot while you were walking this morning. So he has to check up underneath his feet if there are any thorns there. See the difference between law and life? Law is is a struggle. You got to always check. Is this I don't have sensation, 33:15 so I have to check this, I've got to check that, I've got to check so many things that I don't hurt myself. But when you have life, even a mosquito sits somewhere in your body, you feel it immediately. That's the difference between law and 33:30 life, the tree of law and the tree of life. And you know, Adam like a fool tried to live under law and that is how most human beings live. And even after being born again. But the law of life in Christ Jesus has set me free. 33:46 But this is not automatic. Because in that day Adam could just reach to the tree of life and eat it. But today the Bible says in Romans sorry, Genesis 3 that in front of life there in the front of the tree of life there's a sword 34:00 after Adam sinned. There's a sword going round and round and round in all directions. You can't get there. Before Adam sinned, you could reach out and take it. But after sin, when Adam got this thing which we call the flesh or the self life, 34:19 the only way to get to that tree of life is to let the sword fall on our flesh. If you accept it, you can get to the tree of life. And that's where the Holy Spirit helps us. So we read in Romans 8:4, 34:37 now we can see all the requirement of the law can be fulfilled in us. Not should be. Again, it's not a commandment. He's saying it will be. Might so that the requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who Here's our part. 34:55 We do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the spirit. So in other words, we're not talking about an automatic life where, you know, you switch on a fan and it keeps running. You don't have to do anything more. You 35:10 put on the switch, now it's there. No. You have to take up the cross daily. There's no conflict between taking up the cross daily and life in the Holy Spirit. And this is what we need to understand. Some people think there's a paradox 35:24 there. I thought it's the work of the spirit and it's not our work. Well, if it were like that, if God did it like that, you know what would happen? We would become like the planets. Planets don't need to make any choice. 35:43 I mean, we live a 70, 80 years. The planets have obeyed God for thousands of years. Automatic. You would be you'd become a robot. God doesn't want robots. He didn't make Adam a robot that walked up to the tree of knowledge and moved away and walked 35:59 the other way, not like that. But made a deliberate choice. I choose. And God will never make you a robot. And I want to tell you even in heaven you will not be a robot. I repeat these things because I really am eager that every one of you will come 36:16 into life in the Holy Spirit. That's the way God wants you to live. Life under the grace of God. A ministry in the Holy Spirit. This is what God wants. So you see the balance also here uh in Romans 8:13. 36:35 Romans 8 is a wonderful chapter about life in the spirit. For example, verse 6. It says we can how we can find out the mind of the spirit when you're finding God's will. How do you know whether your mind is moving in the direction of what your 36:50 flesh is saying? It'll bring a spirit of death in you. A dis- a dis- um something that's heavy. But when your mind is set on the spirit, there's life and peace in your heart. In other words, 37:08 there's a upsurge of life and peace when you're considering something. When you're considering marrying somebody. I mean, there can be an upsurge because the flesh has she's a pretty girl or he's a rich man. Not talking about that. If you want to 37:23 know the mind of the spirit, you have to surrender all those desires and say, "Lord, I'll choose anybody you want for me." But and if you walk in the spirit, the spirit will give you an upsurge of life and peace. And there's something that all of you 37:39 who are growing in the Christian life must develop because one day God will place you in leadership somewhere. Or even if you don't come to leadership, you're if you're a woman, you may become a mother one day and you'll be a leader of your children. 37:56 Yeah, even women are leaders of their children. Timothy's mother was her Timothy's leader and made him an ap- good enough to be an apostle one day. But you know, you need as a leader, one of the great needs you have is for 38:10 discernment. I'll tell you, after 40 years of being an elder, I'm absolutely convinced, more than the ability to preach, is discernment. Because if you don't have discernment, you will not be able to gauge people. You will not be able to give 38:27 responsibility to people. All types of wrong people will get into the church. It's by discernment that we keep people out. It's by discernment that we appoint elders. It's by discernment that we discipline people. And that discernment comes through when 38:43 you walking in the spirit, the spirit gives you peace about somebody or a hesitation about someone. Or in marriage or in considering a job or so many situations. Guidance. Life in the Holy Spirit, verse 6. 38:59 And then verse 13. Even a person who has come this far, Romans 8 2, the law of the spirit of life has set me free from the life of the law of sin and death, can again 39:18 go back, verse 13, to live according to the flesh. That can happen anytime. Because taking up the cross is not just a once for all event. You have to keep coming to the tree of life every day. And every day that sword has to fall on 39:33 your self self life. That's why Jesus said, "You got to take up the cross every day." But it's it's some- something you delight in. Can you delight in the sword falling in your self life? Yes. Let me give you an illustration. 39:52 Do you delight in throwing away the garbage in your chicken uh sorry, not chicken kitchen. Throwing away the garbage in your kitchen in the morning the garbage truck comes and say, "Hey, here it is." Is there a delight there? 40:10 It's the same delight that you'll have when you see that your flesh is full of garbage. It is the same delight. You won't say, "Oh, I have to throw this precious garbage away." No. Thank God I can let the sword go down 40:29 and did and cut it off. It's like cutting off something evil. There's a delight in it. If you live according to the flesh you will die. If by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the body 40:48 you will live. There's a delight in it. It's not a struggle. You read that and go, "Boy, put to death the deeds of the body." Think of it as throwing away garbage. Think of it as cutting away something that's ruining your life. 41:05 There's a beautiful parable I read in one of C.S. Lewis's books. Uh I'm not sure which one it was now, but anyway. Of a man who had a little ugly chameleon. 41:24 Yeah, chameleon is one of those big lizards sitting on his shoulder. It's a picture of the self life. And the angel was there in front of the man and and uh the angel said, "Shall I get rid of that chameleon for you?" 41:43 And the chameleon whispers in his ear and say, "No, no, don't don't let him take me away. I promise I'll behave in future. I'm sorry for all the bad things I did bad, but I I'll behave in future." And he's had this pet for so long that 41:54 he doesn't want to get rid of it. So, he's in a I'm uh two minds. Just like the two minds you have when you're tempted, you know. Shall I yield to this or shall I put it to death? Uh haven't you had that expression? Shall I put this anger to death? Shall I 42:10 put this lustful thought to death? Shall I uh put this desire to watch pornography to death? Shall I put this desire to be unforgiving or jealous to death? You know, one would think you want to get rid of these terrible things, but 42:23 somehow there's something in the flesh which says, "Hey, hang on. I'll behave myself in future." It's a liar. He's not going to behave himself. So, he keeps it. He's hesitant. And um so, it sits there and his life is miserable. 42:38 But finally he gets so fed up he shuts his eyes and tells the angel, "Okay, just take it away." And the angel immediately pulls it out. Throws it down. And the chameleon gets turned into a beautiful white horse. 42:57 And the angel says, "Now you don't have to walk. You can ride. Get on that horse and ride." And then he realizes, "Boy, what I missed for so many years by thinking just keeping it pet tapping it and petting it." Do you know what you're missing, 43:16 brothers and sisters? You know what you're missing by tapping and petting that anger and that jealousy and that lustful thought and that pornography. I know you get some pleasure out of it. This guy got some pleasure out of the chameleon. 43:31 And he always whispered, "No, I won't do it again." Haven't you seen that? Haven't you seen that sin saying, "No, it won't happen again. Just this last time." It's not the last time. What we're missing, life in the Holy 43:44 Spirit. It's a beautiful parable. He rides on the horse and says, "I was struggling all these years walking. Now it's so free. I don't need no tiredness. The horse is taking me. I'm going places." This is the life God is calling us to. 44:01 God is a good God. Everything he plans for us is for our very best. When he tells you to put your flesh to death it is for the very best. You'll get something else in exchange. Always bearing in our body. Turn to that verse. 44:19 Second Corinthians 4. This is life in the Holy Spirit. Second Corinthians 4 it says, verse 10. Paul had come to this life. He's not reading a verse. He's giving a testimony. 44:37 We are reading a verse now, remember. But Paul was not quoting a verse. He was giving his testimony and this must become our testimony. Always. This is more than daily. Luke 9:23 says, "Take your cross daily." But it means throughout the day. 44:56 Not just once in a day. And that's why he says, "Always means 24/7 I carry in my body the dying of Jesus." What is the dying of Jesus? Do you know that leprosy is also called 45:16 by medical people Hansen's disease? Why is it called Hansen's disease? Because a Norwegian guy called Hans Hansen first discovered this one bacteria or whatever it is. I don't 45:35 know the medical term that causes this leprosy. So, it's called Hansen's disease. He discovered it. So, the dying of Jesus. What does that mean? It's what he did first. He had a self will 45:54 when he came to earth. And he said in John 6:38, "I came from heaven never to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me." He could have also said, "In heaven I always did my own will cuz my will was one with the Father. 46:12 But now I have taken on a body. I was born of Mary who is of the seed of Adam. So, I have a will. I don't have an old man because I didn't have an earthly father. The Holy Spirit brought me to birth. 46:32 He didn't have an old man like us, but he had a will. There was no sin in him. But he had a will which if he exercised in his own favor it would become sin. But he never did it. He always put that will to death. 46:49 That's called the dying of Jesus cuz he's the first person in the history of the human race who did it consistently throughout life. And so, it's called the dying of Jesus and he did it all through his life. And when we 47:05 are called to follow him, this is what it means. All of us will acknowledge that the most wonderful life that anybody lived on this earth was the life of Jesus. No doubt about it. Don't be wanted, but this is the way. There's a sword in 47:20 front of the tree of life. And we have to go to it every day. Always bearing in our body the dying of Jesus so that the life of Jesus will be manifested in this body. This is the secret. Dear brothers and sisters, it is absolutely certain that what Paul 47:40 experienced in his life, the life of Jesus being manifested in his body, is like you know the light burning in a bulb. It's there, but burns. The same way the life of Jesus being manifested in our body. 48:00 The kindness, the goodness, the humility, the purity, the righteousness, the uprightness, the gentleness, the forgiveness, the mercy, goodness, the faithfulness, the joy, the peace. 48:18 The life of Jesus. And one would think people would rush for this and say, "God, what is the price?" Price is just let the sword fall on your self life. Just let it. I'll help you. I'll help you. When you go through that 48:34 moment and you're tempted, I'll help you, but let it fall. Let it fall. I won't take away your will because the moment I take away your will, you'll be a robot. You have your free will, but I want you, my child, to exercise it in my favor 48:50 always, the Lord says. That's the thing. So, if I do that, then always the life of Jesus will be manifested in our body. Imagine a life like this where anytime anybody sees you, anytime anybody talks to you, it's the spirit of Christ coming forth 49:07 from you in your words, in your language, in your conduct, in your your expression in your face as well cuz sometimes the expression in our face reveals what is in our heart. We can control our tongue, but we cannot control the expression in 49:24 our face. Do you know that? Uh no amount of yoga or Buddhism can make you control your the expression on your face. If you're gloomy, you'll see it in your face. If you're angry, it's seen in your face. You can control your tongue. 49:42 The heart is revealed in the face. There's a verse in the Old Testament that says as the as a man's face is seen in the water, so the heart of man is revealed as well. And then it goes on to say, "Because this is what God wants, the life of 50:00 Jesus always in our body." What does God do? Verse 11, 2 Corinthians 4:11, he always delivers us over to death. Are you surprised that you find so many pressures in life every day? That you find circumstances not exactly 50:18 what you want? Praise the Lord. That's 2 Corinthians 4:11. You're being delivered into a situation where God says, "Do you want to die?" You know, like Jesus asked that man who was 38 years at the pool of Bethesda, "Do you want to 50:38 get well?" As I said, you think that's a stupid question to ask a sick man. But that's exactly what God's asking you in the moment of temptation. Do you want to get well? Do you want the life of Jesus? Do you really want it? 50:54 Do you want the surgery? You'll be healed of your cancer. At the last minute, the patient can say, "No, no, no, surgery, I don't want." Well, then you got to live with your cancer. But most people will go in for the surgery, especially if it's free. And 51:07 this one is free. We're delivered over to death for Jesus' sake. That means God arranges different circumstances in my life every day. It could be in your home. 51:26 Could be in your relationship with your wife or husband. Very often it is. Or with your children. Or with your neighbor. Or very often with your relatives. Or your parents. Where you are delivered over into a situation where you have to die. If you want the 51:43 life of Jesus, you got to die. Of course, you don't have to die. You say, "No, no, no, I'm not going to die there." Then you know from past experience what manifests itself in you? The life of Adam. And all of us have had plenty of 51:59 experiences of that. And what the Lord asks us today is, "Are you sick and tired?" Are you weary and heavy laden? Are you sick and tired of that type of manifestation? Do you want another life really? It's not going to come with just one 52:15 decision right now, always. But the Lord says, "I'll help you. Don't get scared by this word always. I'm there. Lo, I'm with you always." Put that along with this verse. Always delivered to death. Constantly delivered to death for Jesus' sake. Why? 52:31 So that the life of Jesus may be manifested in this mortal flesh. It's amazing. And that's not the end. That's just my life. Now from there it goes on to ministry to others. So then 52:49 as death works in me verse 12 life works in other people. This is rivers of living water. The first one was only the well of water springing up, you know, the Lord said. I will put a spring inside you, like he 53:07 told the Samaritan woman, springing up to everlasting life. But that only blesses me. If I have a well in my home, I get water, but the neighbors around me are all dying of thirst. But if a river comes out from me, it blesses my neighbors as well. 53:22 So Romans, I mean, 2 Corinthians 4:11 is just like a well. 10 and 11, just me. My life is changed to life of Christ. But verse 12 is a river. Death works in me and life in you. How is that? That's really amazing. This 53:41 is going on from life to ministry, and that is God's will. God's will is that that spring of water that satisfies you will become a river and flow out to many other people. I'll tell you something, dear brothers and sisters. I've been a Christian for 53:55 56 years. In my entire life I never once heard anybody explain it to me so clearly like this. Never once. I had to struggle to find it. 54:14 But it changed my life when I found it. And because I found it I it I value it so much. Because I had to struggle and struggle and struggle for years to get it. You know how it is, some somebody gives you a very expensive gift and you don't 54:28 value it. But if you have worked hard for 30 years to get it, you'll value it. Boy, you really will value it. And that's the tragedy with a lot of people in our church. We're getting it all so freely. And invariably we don't value what we get freely. 54:47 Some people ask us sometimes, "Brother Zac, why do you sell those books? Why don't you just give them out free?" I'll tell you one reason is because people won't value it if we give it out free. We'd be glad to give it out free. 54:57 We do so many other things free on the internet which cost much more than those books. But the reason we don't give out the books free is people won't value it. You'll probably find it in some trash can or accumulating dust in some shelf for many 55:09 years. But when people pay for it they value it. That's why. We want people to value it and read it. I've sometimes told people who can't afford a book, I say, "Okay, you can't pay for it. I'll give it to you free, but you got to make me a promise you'll 55:26 read it from the first word to the last word. Then you can have it free." So it's like that. If you really want this life if you long for it, you're sick and tired of your defeated life, and you say, "Lord, I want this life which not only blesses 55:44 me, but which will flow out of me to bless others. I want it." That's why in the Acts of the Apostles, you always read about people being in the spirit and filled with the spirit and led by the spirit. The spirit said this and the 55:56 spirit said that. How did they come to that life? Because they consistently lived this way. That's why Paul says in Philippians 3, towards the end of his life, he says Philippians 3 He says in verse 10, he says, "I have a 56:13 great longing that I may know Jesus more and the power of his resurrection." That is this resurrected life of Jesus. I want to experience it in my spirit. But that is only possible, verse 10, by being conformed to his death. 56:32 You see how it comes out there also? That the life of Jesus. He says, "I want to be conformed to his death so that I can have the power of his resurrection." Because every time I die, I know I'll be raised up from the dead. 56:45 When Jesus died, he was absolutely certain that his father would raise him up from the dead. And you can be absolutely certain that if you die in a certain situation God will raise you up. Just like the put guy who put you into 56:57 the baptism tank lifted you up. He didn't leave you there. And God will not leave you there. You die, he will raise you up. You bear the dying of Jesus, you can be absolutely certain you'll get his life. You go past that sword, there's a 57:08 tree of life there. Definitely. He's not going to leave you empty. I proved it for years. Seek for it. Say, "Lord, I'm willing to pay any price. This wretched self life. Why do you want to preserve it? Why do you want to preserve this little animal 57:23 here that sits there and making life miserable for you? Throw it away. Cooperate with the Lord. You know, Paul was writing to the Galatians who had the big mistake of starting life in the spirit and then ending up struggling in the flesh to 57:39 live. Just like many of us in In Galatians 3, he says this to them. The very interesting words in verse 2 and 3. Galatians chapter 3 and verse 2 and 3. Galatians chapter 3 verse 2 and 3. One thing I want to find out from you. 57:58 How did you receive the Holy Spirit? Was it by some works of the law that you did? Or by hearing with faith? You can't receive the spirit by works of the law. You fast and pray and think, "One day I'll deserve." No, you never will. 58:14 By faith. Then are you so foolish, verse 3 that you began in the spirit now you think you're going to be perfected by the flesh? How were your sins forgiven? Well, you did something. You repented and believed. But it was free. 58:32 In the same way how are you going to be perfected? You have to do something. Lord, I'm willing to give up my will. And you come into life in the Holy Spirit. Throughout the Acts of the Apostles, you see the Holy Spirit emphasized so much. 58:46 Completely different from the Old Testament. I was reading just this morning how even the people who were called to serve food, Acts 6. You know, there was a big problem about serving food those days that there was a lot of partiality. 59:04 Partiality is a sin that raised its ugly head in Acts chapter 6. And I'll tell you something I've discovered in 40 years of working in CFC churches. There's partiality sometimes even in elders towards their own children or towards 59:22 friends, towards special friends. It's a sin which is very difficult to get rid of. You really have to be ruthless and say, "I will refuse to be partial. It's a sin. It's as bad as adultery as far as I'm concerned to be partial. 59:39 And so there was partiality there. They were giving more food to the Jews and less food to the Greek widows. And when they complained about it, the apostles said the only solution for this is to get some people who are filled with the Holy Spirit. 59:53 They will not be partial. So they said Acts 6, select from among you seven men of good reputation full of the Holy Spirit. We'll get them to distribute the food. You see how even for a simple thing in the church, 1:00:10 some an ordinary task, where there was a danger of partiality, they needed people full of the Holy Spirit. And I tell you that is the greatest need in CFC churches. Men and women who are full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom 1:00:30 and faith. That can be you. Let's pray. Are you sick and tired of your up-and-down defeated life? You may say, "Well, Lord, I've many a time I've said yes, I am, and I come to 1:00:48 you." But I learned today that it is not a once-for-all thing. You can take that first step today. There's a proverb that says the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. 1:01:07 Then another step. Then another step. And after some years, you finish a thousand miles. The journey begins with one step, and you can take one step today and say, "Lord, now I realize that it is not just one step. It's the beginning of many steps 1:01:26 I'm taking today. It's not just one decision, but the beginning of many decisions that I'm going to take throughout the day to say no to my self life, to respond to the Holy Spirit every single time." Heavenly Father, I pray in Jesus' name 1:01:45 that you will help us that which I have only given in words. I pray that you will take through the Holy Spirit and make it life to everyone here. So that our lives can be changed and transformed, and our church will be transformed. 1:02:05 We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
