Old covenant preaching was commandments. 1:24 Do this, don't do this, do this, don't do this. They even had commandments like you must wear these type of clothes. You know, in Deuteronomy there was a commandment, you must not wear a dress which is half woolen and half cotton. 1:48 It was all external. But in the new covenant, even though there are commandments, it is an example that is pointed out. For example, one clear example, the Old Testament commandment was love your neighbor as yourself. 2:16 Throughout, from the time of the law up to the time of Christ. But Jesus said, I am changing that slightly. Not really changing it, but putting it in another light. 2:39 Love one another, following my example. And he called it a new commandment. Love one another as I have loved you. You see how now he is giving an example and not just a commandment. 3:02 That is why it is a new commandment. When you have an example, it is new. In everything, we have the example of Jesus. And if you want to be a true servant of God. 3:27 Man or woman. Boy or girl. You should be able to say to others. Follow me. As I follow Christ. I used to tell the young girls and the teenage girls and 20, 25 year old girls in CFC. 3:55 I say, you know the way you dress. You should be able to say to the 10, 11 year old girls. Follow me. Can you say that? 4:15 I say, if you can't say that, then you must change your dress. Or, all young people, you should be able to say to the little boys and girls, learn to speak like I speak. What about parents? 4:36 What about parents? Supposing a father tells his two children. You must speak to the same way I speak to the same way I speak to mommy. Can you say that? 4:57 What about your sisters? You tell your two children, you must speak to each other the same way you hear me speak to daddy. You can't say that? You can't say that. The children will say, oh yeah, that's great. 5:17 I'm ready to talk to my brothers the way you speak to each other. You shout at each other. I'll also shout at my brothers. New Testament is all about example. 5:39 You know, the apostle Paul said in 2nd Corinthians 7. Verse 2. Make room for us in your hearts. Make verse chapter 7 and verse 2. 6:03 That is in your heart. Give us some room. Why? Look at our example. He's not giving a commandment saying, wrong nobody, corrupt nobody, take advantage of nobody. He says, look at me. 6:24 I have not wronged any of you. I have not corrupted any of you. I have not taken advantage of any of you. That is a true elder brother. He's an example. 6:44 Because he himself is following another example, Jesus Christ. Even the greatest men in the Old Testament like Moses and Elijah could not say that. Moses, the only time we read about him and his wife is when they are fighting about something in Exodus chapter 4. 7:09 Moses and his wife. Moses had two sons. How they grew up. How they grew up. Nobody knows. Moses and his wife. Moses and his wife. Moses and his wife. Moses and his wife. Moses and his wife. Moses and his wife. Moses and his wife. 7:19 Moses and his wife. Moses and his wife. So, if today's preachers are not like that. Please don't come and look at my home life. Don't look at my children. Listen to what I say. But not in the new covenant. Look at me. 7:40 Follow my example. Live in your home like I live with my wife. Bring up your children the way I brought up my children. I'm not perfect. But we are trying to follow Jesus. 8:01 And we are pressing on to perfection. It's like saying we are trying to climb the top of this 10,000 meter mountain. It's still a long way. I've only climbed 1,000 meters. 8:21 Still 9,000 meters to go. But you can follow me. And as I move forward, you keep following me. I'll keep on being your leader. 8:43 Every true servant of God, every true elder brother should be able to say, follow me as I follow Christ. It doesn't mean we have reached the top. It's not after we reach the top, we say, follow me. 9:05 Paul said, I have not attained, but follow me as I follow Christ. We saw that in Philippians 3.13. I have not reached the top. I have not made these two onions completely zero. Of selfishness and pride. 9:26 And still working towards perfection. But it's become thinner than it was. You got thick onions. Follow me. 1 Corinthians 11 verse 1. Follow me as I follow Christ. 9:51 So that's why in verse 5 of Philippians 2 it says, look at Jesus. And have the same attitude in yourself that Jesus had. And then he talks about these two things. Selfishness. 10:12 And pride. Look at Jesus' life. Look how he did everything completely free from selfishness and pride. Though he existed in the form of God, he did not regard equality with God as a thing to be grasped. 10:35 But emptied himself and took the form of a servant. So that there you see his total freedom from selfishness. See, he sat in heaven for eternal ages. And he had need of nothing. 11:00 But he saw people on this earth suffering in sin. Headed for hell. Even on earth their life was like a hell. Home life was so miserable. 11:22 And here he was in heaven enjoying all this wonderful life there. And he sat there and said, I can't just sit here and enjoy all this myself. I have to do something for these people. That's the spirit of Christ. 11:45 If you want to see the opposite of that. Your story, you see in the story of the rich man and Lazarus. In Luke 16. Here was a rich man who had so many things. And there was that poor beggar sitting outside his gate. But he never once thought about, he must have at least some of the things I have. 12:15 He didn't think like that. That's why he went to hell. All his doctrines were correct. He didn't go to hell because his doctrines were wrong. He believed in Jehovah. He believed in the Ten Commandments. He kept the Passover. 12:37 He kept all the feasts. Went to the Jerusalem three times a year. Every Saturday to the synagogue. But he didn't think of, that man must have something I have. I didn't get all this with my ability. 12:58 I could have been born deficient and maimed in my mind and body. And I could not have made any money. But I made a lot of money. Because I was healthy. And I had a good mind. Those are God's gifts. 13:20 And maybe I had a rich father. Who would give me a good education. And that poor man. His parents could not give him a good education. So he's poor. Maybe he's got some, he's lame. And so he's a beggar. 13:42 He didn't think like that. He thought, my own ability, I've become all this. And so he didn't care for him. But these are two opposites you see. Jesus was like that. Yes, he's like that. Rich. But he sort of saw us and he said, I've got to do something for you. 14:05 So he came down. And became like us. Even though he knew that everybody would ill-treat him and finally kill him. Okay, I'm willing to go through all that. If I can only lift them up and bring them to where I am. 14:31 You know, if you want to be spiritual, meditate on that. I would encourage you to spend the next one year meditating on just that. Take me seriously. How Jesus wanted us to be where he was. 14:58 And he was willing to go through rejection, suffering, death. In order to bring us there. I know the Lord has spoken to me through that. He said, this is what it means to be filled with my spirit. 15:26 That's how I have understood the fullness of the Holy Spirit. He's not just babbling in tongues. God has given me the gift of tongues. But that is not the main mark of being filled with the Holy Spirit. I'm very thankful for that gift. 15:44 Like I'm thankful for my little finger. I won't cut it off just like I won't give up the gift of tongues. But this is not the heart of my body. No. The heart of the Christian life is. 16:05 Look at Jesus. How he gave himself. Gave up his position and came to the soul. Be careful when you pray, Lord fill me with the Holy Spirit. Because you're asking to be filled with the spirit that's willing to give up everything in order to help other people. 16:31 When I joined the Navy, I was not filled with the Holy Spirit. I joined it 100% seeking my own. I was only 15 years old. And I sought my own 100%. I used to pray, go to church and all that. 16:55 But I only sought my own. If I go here, I can get a good job, get a good salary. And I can become a big man in India one day. And when I was 19 and a half, Jesus came into my heart. 17:16 And I was baptized when I was about 21. I was about 23. God filled me with the Holy Spirit. And suddenly my whole vision changed. All that interest to promote myself went out. 17:42 It had no attraction for me anymore. Because I got a little bit of the spirit of Christ. I was filled according to my size. The size of the vessel. God cannot fill a vessel more than its size. 18:04 My heart capacity was small. It's bigger today. As much as it was, I gave it completely to God. And he filled it. If you don't give everything, he doesn't fill it. Like the boy who gave five loaves and two fish to Jesus. 18:30 Jesus blessed all of it. If he had given only three loaves and one fish, God would have blessed only that. But do you know what it means to be filled with the spirit? Oh God, give me the spirit Jesus had. Oh God, give me the spirit Jesus had. 18:48 Where I don't think about myself. But I am willing to sacrifice to bring others into this wonderful life that you have already given me. See, for 16 years after I was born again, I did not know the overcoming life. 19:15 So even though I was filled with the spirit, I backslid. And God had to fill me with the spirit again. And show me something more. About the new covenant. And the body of Christ. But in those years, when I was backsliding. 19:40 It is very easy to backslide when you don't know the overcoming life. You can do a lot of work. But to be filled with the Holy Spirit means. You no longer seek your own. See the glory of God. And the good of others. 20:01 See, it is described here like this in Philippians 2. Not only Jesus. Here is another example. Paul says, I will give you one more example. Jesus is the first example. Another example, verse 19, is Timothy. 20:22 He is the best of my co-workers. He says, I don't have anybody, verse 20, with the same spirit like he has. He is filled with the Holy Spirit. But how do you know? Not because he speaks in tongues. I am sure Timothy spoke in tongues. 20:45 But he had the spirit of Christ. How do we know? Verse 21. He did not seek his own interest but the things of Christ Jesus. And, verse 20, he was concerned about the welfare of other people. 21:09 Two, two things. He was concerned about the glory of God. Of glory of Christ. And, the good of others. That man is really filled with the Holy Spirit. Because that is the spirit of Christ. Which is described in Philippians 2, verse 5 to 8. 21:31 Freedom from selfishness. What do you read in verse 21? He does not seek after his own interest. But he is concerned about the welfare of others, verse 20. That is the spirit of Christ in verse 5 and 6. 21:52 He was in heaven. He was in heaven and he did not seek his own interest. I remember when I got this understanding of an overcoming life. That Jesus was tempted like me. I never sinned. And, I could walk like him. 22:15 This changed my life so much. It changed my home life. It changed the way I spoke. In my mother tongue. It changed everything. It changed my understanding of what it means to build a church. 22:37 Way back then, more than 30 years ago. I said, Lord, if you give me life. I will spread this truth throughout India. I will not seek my own comfort. Because so many believers in India need to hear this. 23:03 I can't do it. But Lord, I am available if you want me to do it. I want to ask you, my brothers and sisters. All the things that many of you have heard for so many years in the church. Has it really saved you from seeking your own interest? 23:26 Has it really brought you to seek the interest of Christ above everything else? Has it made you, has it made you seek the welfare of others and not your own? Or are you spiritually like the rich man who's got everything and you don't care for the poor beggars who don't have anything? 23:55 I really believe, I really believe God has made many of us spiritually rich at least in our understanding of the truth. You may not have much money. Money is worthless in eternity. 24:16 So if you make a poor man on this earth rich with money, he can still go to hell. It's eternal wealth I'm talking about. God has made us rich. 24:37 There are many around us who are poor. They've got a lot of money. They attend big churches. But I look at them spiritually, they're like beggars. They're like babies. 24:59 You know how babies play games? They're not serious about God. And that's how I find all these people today. They come to the platform. And they fall down. And they laugh. It's like babies. 25:20 And a lot of people think this is the power of the Holy Spirit. It's babies. They're playing games. I don't say it's the devil. It's just babies playing games. That's all. I mean you see your two children playing, falling down, laughing. 25:39 What do you say? You don't say you've got the devil. No, they're babies. But they must grow up. I mean if you see your 20-year-old falling down and laughing at the others, you'll say something wrong with them. 26:02 So I don't say this is all devil. I say these are babies. You really want the power of the Holy Spirit. You do not seek your own interest. You seek the interest of others. You see the glory of Jesus Christ. 26:22 That's not just in an action, two minutes. Falling and laughing and all that. It's a life. It's a life. It's a life. It's a way you live. Where you hold. Your decisions you take. I decide to go to move my residence from here to there. 26:46 Why? Because that's better for the glory of Jesus Christ. Because that's better for the good of others. Brother, you are really spiritual. What about a person who doesn't care for these things? I don't care about the glory of Christ or the good of others. 27:08 This is good for me and my family. I am not saying you are not born again. But you are not filled with the Holy Spirit. That I can tell you. What is the Spirit of Christ? Did he take a single decision for his own sake? 27:33 Did he make a single decision in his life seeking his own? I am talking about selfishness. I am talking about these big lumps in the clay that prevent the potter from making us what we should be. 27:58 You say, you mean we have to come to that standard to serve the Lord? That's only Jesus can live like that. Timothy lived like that. And when Paul looked around at all his co-workers. He didn't say they are all bad people. 28:19 He didn't say they are all living in sin. Yeah, they are overcoming sin. They have got a good preaching ability. They can preach fiery in the pulpit. And they are living good upright lives. They have overcome anger and dirty thoughts. 28:44 But when I look at their life, I can see they are seeking their own. Paul had discernment. They are not seeking the glory of Christ. Paul observed them for many years. And he said, I see the decisions they make. 29:06 And I can see that their decisions are not based on the glory of Christ or the good of other people. They make that decisions based on what is good for me. What is good for me? 29:26 What is good for my family? You take any godless unbeliever in the world. How does he make his decision? Every atheist. He thinks, what is good for me and my family? 29:47 You also take the decision the same way. The only thing he doesn't claim to be filled with the Holy Spirit. But you claim to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Just because you babble something. Just because you go for a lot of conferences. 30:06 Just because you know so much Bible. Just because you overcome anger. Buddha overcame anger 3,000 years ago. Yoga. People who do yoga. Who overcome sexual desire. And anger. 30:29 It's not the spirit of Christ. It's a deception. Person who is filled with the Holy Spirit. Seeks the glory of Jesus Christ. There was a decision that Jesus took. I'm going to move from this place to this place. 30:52 From heaven to earth. Lord, why are you doing it? What are you going to get out of it? We may say, well, I will be more sanctified if I go from here to there. Even that is a selfish desire. 31:15 Even that is a selfish desire. Jesus didn't come from heaven to earth to become more holy. Sometimes you may think. I'm going through all these trials. I will submit to it because I'll become more holy. 31:37 That's not the spirit of Christ. You are seeking your own even there. I will be more holy. Oh Lord, break me. Why? I will be more holy. You see how this selfishness has got layers and layers of in this onion. 31:58 Whatever you do, it doesn't say do to make yourself more holy. Do it for the glory of God. That's the spirit of Christ. And that's what Timothy had. 32:21 So, Paul didn't say all his other workers were useless. Yeah, I can use them for different things. But, if I really want to get a good work done, I have to choose only Timothy. Do you think all elder brothers, even in our churches, are equally spiritual? 32:47 Not even Paul's workers were all equally spiritual. It's not true. Just because somebody is associated with CFC, doesn't mean he suddenly becomes spiritual. You know, a lot of people, those days, some of them must be proud of the other Christians. 33:09 I'm a co-worker of the Apostle Paul. Oh, your brother Paul's co-worker, yeah? They got some honor like that. But Paul saw they were not spiritual. They're seeking some honor, saying they're associated with me. 33:32 But one of these is really spiritual. Timothy. And you say, Paul, why do you say that? Because this man, I've watched him, watched him, watched him. He never takes a decision in his own interest. 33:52 He's always thinking, what will glorify Christ? How can I help other people? And this poor man, Timothy, had so much frequent stomach aches. We read in 1 Timothy 5 and verse 21. And I'm sure he suffered a lot because of that. 34:14 Sorry, 1 Timothy 5.23. With all those stomach ailments. And no proper medicines those days. He served God. Imagine if you had constant stomach ache. He says there in that verse, he frequently had it. 34:41 Wouldn't that be enough excuse for you to just stay at home? Yeah, God has shown me I must stay at home because he's given me these frequent stomach aches. Timothy said no. Stomach ache doesn't prevent me from walking. 35:03 I can walk and go there and help people. I can get into that ship and go to that Ephesus or somewhere else and help me. If I have stomach ache, I'll live with it. That's all. God has allowed me to have it for some reason. 35:23 Maybe to humble me, I'll accept it. My elder brother also has, Paul has a thorn in the flesh. God has given me this. It's not going to hinder me from living for God. What a man. 35:43 Paul saw these little, little decisions that Timothy took. Where he didn't complain about little, little things. Like the way believers complain today. It's, I've got a little fever, so I don't think I'll go for the meeting today. 36:03 Or it's raining, so that means God is telling me not to go to the meeting. He's telling me to pray at home today. Do you think such people are following Jesus Christ? That in heaven he says, oh it's raining on earth, I'll get wet there, so I better not go to the earth. 36:27 No, no, no. The spirit of Christ is so different. And it says in Philippians 2 verse 5. Is this for full time workers? It's for all believers. Have this attitude which is in Christ. And if you think that's a high standard. 36:49 Have the attitude that was in Timothy verse 19 to 21. It's exactly the same. He did not seek his own. And he humbled himself and served others. So I'm just pointing out to you how we can easily deceive ourselves that we are spiritual. 37:14 God is trying to form us but he's not succeeding. Because you know, I've sometimes pictured this like this in my mind. God is trying to make me the most beautiful vessel in the world. I can't do it. 37:34 I can't do it. If I try to make myself Christ-like, it's just like a lump of mud saying, I will make myself into a beautiful pot. I'm holding in that pile of mud here, say, in a potter's house. 37:57 And even though it's good mud selected by the potter. Just like you and I have been selected by God. But this mud suddenly gets some high thoughts about itself. Aha, this potter, out of all the mud, the potter selected me. 38:18 It's true. But now I can make myself into a nice pot. Say, what a stupid mud that is. That's how stupid you and I will be if we think we can make ourselves, even though God has selected us. 38:41 Only he can make us. I have to submit to it. And this is the picture I've got in my mind. Sometimes in God's dealings with me. There's a little hard bit of mud there. Some little seeking my own. 39:04 And God says, I want to crush it. I want to crush that. And make it soft mud. How does he do that? He takes us through different circumstances. That's the meaning of humble yourself under the mighty hand of God. 39:27 God's mighty hands are stronger than iron vise pressing and crushing us. Better than a hammer, a blacksmith's hammer hitting the anvil. And the Lord says, I won't do it if you don't want it. 39:57 I never do anything by force. Only the devil forces people. God says, let me do it. God says, let me do it. But he waits. Our part is saying, yes, Lord. 40:18 That's all. I only have to say, Amen. Yes, Lord, do it. Timothy said, yes. The devil says, hey, you got stomachache. You better stay. 40:38 God says, if you want, you can stay. I want you to go there. What about my stomachache, Lord? My grace is enough for you. Timothy says, fine. 40:58 These are the type of people who accomplish the most for God on this earth. There's one more example here. In Philippians, it's not only Jesus. Timothy is another. There's one more example. 41:18 Verse 25. He says, He was ministering to my need. You know, we read earlier that Paul was in prison. 41:40 You read that in chapter 1. Verse 13. He was in prison. When a man is in prison, he cannot get many things. There was somebody serving him. A brother from Philippi came all the way to where Paul was in prison to help him. 42:06 This is a real good servant of God. He calls him, my brother. Verse 22, 25. My fellow worker. And my fellow soldier. A soldier doesn't say, I've got a stomachache. I can't go to the battle today. 42:28 So, Christians who say that. Soldier doesn't say, I've got a headache, sir. I can't go to the battle today. Aphrodite was a soldier. Aphrodite was a soldier. And one a servant. Now, how do we know he had the spirit of Christ? 42:48 We read in verse 26. He was sick. And it says here, he was very distressed when he was sick. Why was he distressed? 43:09 Now, many people, when they are sick, they are distressed that nobody came to visit me. The elder did not come immediately within one day and pray for me. 43:31 He didn't rush to the hospital when he heard that I was sick. That is what distresses the good-for-nothing, third-rate believers these days. But read here what distressed Aphrodite is. He was distressed that other people heard he was sick. 43:58 Oh, they will think I'm more serious than I really am. It's not so serious. I mean, I've got a little cancer, but that's not so serious. Why should they worry about it? What an attitude. Oh, don't tell anybody I'm okay. 44:22 How sad I feel those poor Philippians heard I was sick. Do you ever feel like that? Where you're sick and you don't want anybody to know about it. I'm not saying you don't ask people to pray for you. 44:49 But if Aphrodite was not like these believers who just go around pestering elders to pray for every cough and cold. Do you know what it says in James chapter 5 about when to call the elders for prayer? 45:13 Just listen. James 5, 14. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church and let them pray over him, anointing him, oil in the name of the Lord. Do you know the difference between let him go to the elders of the church and let him call for the elders of the church? 45:40 What is the difference? Think about it. Meditate on it. If anyone is sick, let him go to the elders of the church and let him ask them to pray for him. Is that a verse like that? No. Let him call for the elders of the church. 46:01 What does that mean? Does that mean he sits in the back chair like a Maharaja and says, call the elders here? Do you think that's the meaning? No. This means this man is so sick he can't get up from his bed in his house. 46:29 That's the time you call for the elders of the church. All this little cough and cold and fever and stomachache and all that. I'm not saying don't ask other people to pray for you. All I say is don't make a big fuss over it as if you got AIDS or something like that. 46:54 That's the trouble with a lot of believers today. Oh brother, I've got a pain here. I've got a pain here. Pray for me brother. Lay your hands on me. What have these people read in Philippians chapter 2? Ephaphroditus was so distressed. 47:19 It's a strong word in English. Distress means you heard that your son died or something. He was in such distress. And we go to Ephaphroditus, brother what's the matter? Why are you looking so sad? 47:41 Oh brother, those Philippians heard I was sick. Why should that disturb you? You should be happy. No, they may think it is more serious than it really is. I'm not so sick. How sick was he? 48:02 Verse 27. He was sick to the point of death. This was not a cough and a cold. He was sick to the point of death. Day after day after day, he was getting worse and worse. 48:25 But what distressed him? Not that other people didn't hear I was sick. They didn't come all running around my bed to pray for me. I said, Lord, I want to be like that. 48:46 I'm not saying I don't want the prayer of other people. But I don't want their sympathy and their pity and their crying over me and all that. Jesus said to the daughters of Jerusalem, don't pray, don't weep for me, I'm alright. 49:05 Yeah, my head is all bleeding, my back is bleeding, but I'm alright. These people are beating me as I carry the cross, but I'm alright. Because I'm in the will of God. Don't weep for me. Weep for yourselves. That's the spirit of Christ. 49:27 How many of you like other people to come and weep over your problems? That's why you don't grow spiritually. Freudianus didn't want other people to weep over him. Yeah, I appreciate your prayer, brother. 49:47 That I appreciate, Freudianus would have said. How sick are you? Well, pretty close to death. Pray for me. But don't waste your time weeping and crying. I'm okay. And what did he do when he was sick to the point of death? 50:12 He was, verse 25, going and helping Paul's needs in prison. He was ministering to his needs. Have you ever been sick and while you're sick, gone and served others? You see, I've never heard of anybody doing that. 50:35 Haven't you seen your wife doing it for your children, even when she is sick? I've seen my wife do it numerous times. When she's sick, she's still cooking the food and still cleaning the house and still washing the clothes and everything. 51:01 You don't have to go to heaven to see such people. You see it in your own home, in your wife. Your children, see it in your mother. That's why God compares his love to the love of a mother. 51:22 Isaiah 49, 15. He says, even if a mother forgets her child, I will not forget you. He doesn't say father, he says mother. God is like a mother. So, if Aphrodite is in the midst of his sickness, he's saying, hey, Paul may have some need. 51:43 He's in prison. He's nobody to help him. I better go. Some people were afraid to stand with Paul. Oh, if the prison people say we are also friends of Paul, they may lock us also up. 52:07 If Aphrodite was also tempted with that fear, okay, they lock me up, that's fine. I can have a little more fellowship with Paul. But I'm going to go. I'm not going to be afraid of man. My brother is in need. 52:27 I know I've got a little sickness. I can hardly get up and walk. But I'm going to walk and go and help him. What spirit was that? Which did not seek his own interest. But sought the interest of Jesus Christ. 52:48 And because Paul was Jesus Christ's servant. He honored him. The Bible says, he who receives an apostle receives me. So it was like Jesus in prison. If I said, if Jesus were there in prison, I would go even if I'm sick. 53:12 So here, God has given us two examples. He starts with saying in verse 3, do nothing from selfishness. And then he says, have the same attitude of Jesus who was not selfish when he came to this earth. 53:33 And then he says, it's not only Jesus is an example. But Timothy is another example. Epaphrodite is another example. And of course, Paul in humility never talks about himself. But he is a greater example than both of them. 53:53 Why was he in prison? Did he go to prison because he cheated somebody? No, he went to prison only because he sought the glory of God and the good of other people. Imagine a man who sought the glory of God and the good of others so much that he was in prison. 54:14 What about you? Do you avoid anything that's inconvenient? Oh, if I go there, I won't make as much money as I may make here. 54:40 It won't be as comfortable for me there as here. Or I've got children. I'll tell you something. If you honor God and seek his kingdom first, you will never lack anything. 55:07 I can tell you that from 50 years of experience. I can say before God that in these 50 years, as far as I can remember, 55:29 all the major decisions I made in my life, I did not seek my own. I said, Lord, what is your will?
