Yesterday we 10:56 were thinking of the parable of the sower, Matthew chapter 13. And the same passage is there in Luke chapter 8. Luke chapter 8. Jesus talks about the 11:20 parable and its meaning. It starts from verse five, and it goes on up to 15 verse. And he says that 11:42 the seeds which are sown in the good soil they are the people who receive the word in a honest and good heart and hold it fast and bear fruit with perseverance. 12:00 And the next words he talks about the light. No one will light a candle and cover it with a bushel. Yesterday we saw the peripheral eye testing where lights come 12:19 and we'll have to acknowledge it. And if we see the light and if we don't acknowledge it's as if we don't have the vision. We don't have the light. And 18th verse he says 12:39 Luke chapter 8 we saw the 16th verse where it talks about the light. And 17th verse nothing is hidden. Everything will become evident. So God wants us to expose everything in our heart. That's the 12:58 purpose of light. Light is to expose. The church we hear the prophetic word and our thoughts are exposed. If you are sensitive if you really want to hear and when my thoughts are exposed 13:16 immediately admit Lord forgive me. I don't want to repeat it. I don't want to do like that again. Thank you Lord for giving me light on my own condition. I'm thankful. That's a process of growth. And 13:35 18th verse he says, "So, take care how you listen." Take care how you listen. We read in 1 Samuel chapter 3. God 13:55 tells how to listen. Though the prophet or the priest Eli tells this to Samuel, that's little Samuel. It is God 14:13 who is telling that words to Samuel. So, the word comes from the Lord. 10th verse. Then the Lord came and stood and called as at other times, "Samuel, Samuel." And Samuel said, "Speak, 14:31 for your servant is listening." "Speak, your servant is listening." And God is willing to speak, but in what posture in what role are we listening? 14:50 Suppose there's an expert sound engineer. He listens to my talk. And all he will would be thinking is now the bass is slightly high, that this one is low, and how to adjust. In that angle only he'll be thinking. The message will not go in 15:08 because he's a sound engineer. For many years he has been analyzing the sounds, different sounds. Or if a teacher of English who teaches pronunciation and spoken English. If he or she is listening, 15:27 the message will not go in. Oh, this word is not correct in his pronunciation. This grammar is not correct. This is excellent way of expressing. So, she analyzes or he analyzes it on the background of uh 15:44 his or her experience and capability. And I have seen as a teacher correcting lot of papers, trying to find out mistakes, and noting it down. 16:01 And also, I do proofreading for our books to be printed in Tamil land. So, eyes are trying to find out where the mistakes are. So, even some other letter comes which doesn't need any proofreading, but the same thing comes up. 16:20 Uh is there any mistakes? But how are we listening to God? Here, God teaches Samuel. Listen like a servant. There's a lot of difference between a servant listening and others listening. 16:39 A servant, when he listens to the master, he listens to obey. When the master says, "Go and take it." Immediately, he'll go and take it. He will not talk. I'll give him suggestion. "Why can't you take that one, master?" No suggestions, 16:53 no advice to the master. That's a servant. Suppose you have a old person in your home and you are busy with your work. You want to appoint a servant, maid or servant man, and and he come comes there. And the main purpose of appointing him 17:12 is that a particular type of food has to be prepared and given to the old person in your home because you are he's facing lot of health challenges. So you the person is telling uh today you prepare these items, these items, these items. 17:31 He says no, that is not a good idea. We can order from this hotel through Zomato or Swiggy. And immediately gives every time he because he wants to uh spend time with screen, mobile or something. He doesn't want to cook. 17:47 And do you think he's a good servant? Always he gives some advice. No, we can easily order this, that, order that and that's available, this is available. The purpose of appointing him is to cook food and give healthy food. 18:01 But he's not having a mind to listen. Why can't I do this way and that way? When God told Lot and his family, go to this mountain. Was he like the servant listening? No, he's giving advice to God. Lord, your decision is wrong. 18:21 Why are you showing a tough path? I love to climb climb the mountain. There are no roads. I love to hold on to the rocks and some roots. It will be a difficult job. So he started giving advice to the No, no, Lord, this 18:39 place is very near and I will go to this place. So okay, God allowed. But what happened? His wife turned back and because this problem has become easier, no need to think of mountain. So she had a time of relaxing. She turned back. 18:56 Became a pillar of salt. Started giving advice to God. Making things easier. No, God's ways are That's what we read in the book of Isaiah chapter 55. Your thoughts are not my thoughts. Your ways are not my ways. Sometimes we really think that God is 19:15 showing us a difficult way. There's so many easy ways are there. Why not this Lord? Why not that Lord? Why this way? Very difficult. Because we forget that we are servants. We are slaves. Lord, speak. 19:33 Your servant listens. So, listening. The people of Israel were at the border of Canaan. And you know, Moses sent 12 spies. And they all went and investigated the land 19:53 and brought back a lot of fruits to show that it is a land flowing with milk and honey. But did the people see the fruits and got convinced? No. They were there, made up their mind not to obey God. And 20:12 then they listened to the 10 spies who brought a bad report. They were not able to listen to the sound word from Joshua and Caleb. Because it's only two people. 10 people are telling 20:30 their voice becomes very louder. And today's Christianity, a lot of messages, louder messages are coming. And people are attracted. Why can't I go there? Gives miracles this and that, prosperity. It's very sound because 20:45 10 people are shouting. But two people are telling the real word from the Lord. But people don't want to listen. 2 by 12. If you calculate the percentage, 21:02 uh 16.666. Around Yeah, 15% wise. Always God's voice is very gentle. It comes in a soft way. But the world's noise, it is 85%. 21:22 Which one are we going to listen? Lord, when I come to you, let me come to you like a servant, Lord. I want to listen like a servant. And we read in Philippians Jesus 21:40 was an example to that. In Hebrews chapter 10, we read It is written about me in the scroll of the book. And he quotes a verse from Psalms the fifth verse Offering and sacrifices you do not 22:00 desire, but you have prepared a body for me. Lord, I come to do your will. It is written in your book, Lord, about me. Both are same. We hear the voice or God has written to us. When we read the word of God, God can speak to 22:17 us. And Jesus, when he was reading the scroll, God was speaking to him through Isaiah the calling of Jesus to preach the good news to the poor and to open the eyes of the blind. And Holy Spirit put in his heart, it is you. 22:34 It is written about you. When he was reading the book of Isaiah, the scroll. That's why we read in Luke chapter 4. He stood up there to read God's word. I was thinking how Jesus came there to read God's word. There are churches where when the reference is 22:52 told, somebody has to quickly take the reference and read. And I grew up in a church like that. So, there'll be always a competition between two people, who will take the verse and read first. So, because I had listened to that 23:06 pastor, I know what reference he's going to tell next. >> [laughter] >> So, I keep it ready. And I will immediately read. I think Jesus uh would have read like that. Maybe Jesus didn't have a Bible. But, when the priests were preaching, they 23:23 wanted to because there lot of scrolls would have been hanging or they would have kept in some arrangement. Because Moses uh books and all the prophetical books, all so many are there. Even in Isaiah, they may not have 23:41 had one scroll. Maybe five or 10. But, every time Jesus comes to the temple, he is well versed with all the scrolls. So, when he says, "Will somebody come and take Isaiah?" Jesus would come running. When he was a small boy, and he will correctly pick up 23:59 the book of Isaiah. Might be the priest had preached so much from book of Isaiah, Jesus was so much uh conversation with that one. He knows which passage. And very And the passages which God spoke to him during the weekdays, he would come. 24:14 Rabbi, shall I read that book? Rabbi say, "No, no, no. I don't have time. You go. Uh come after 1 hour. I'm now writing the accounts of the previous meeting. I have to settle all the expenses." So, he would quietly sit there and he 24:28 will peep in whether he has finished the work, finished the work. Then he'll come running. Uncle, have you finished? Shall we take that scroll? Okay. Oh, this boy is causing disturbance. Let him Let me take. Okay, take and 24:42 uh we'll read it. So, like that, he would have taken and looked at Isaiah, the particular chapter, verse. And he would be reading and meditating. That's what he's writing. It is written about me in the scroll. How he found 24:54 out? God did not take a scan and to him. No. He had to physically go and unroll it and read it. And Luke chapter 4 we read 16th verse in the place where he grew up, Nazareth. 25:14 According to his practice Luke chapter 4 and verse 16. Why Holy Spirit has added this verse? And he came to Nazareth where he had been brought up as he was his as was his 25:32 custom. He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read. Custom is for both, not only to enter the synagogue but also to read as it was his custom. So reading the word of God was his practice. It's custom. 25:50 How about young people? Do you have the practice? Practicing, practicing, practicing, practicing. Might be you are going and practicing in the football ground or cricket ground or so many things. How much effort you take? 26:03 Like that, do you practice turning the scriptures and reading it? Jesus had that practice. So then the book of Isaiah was given to him. 17th verse. The book of Isaiah was given to him and handed to him and he opened the book 26:20 and found the place where it was written. In Tamil when he just to open, he got the verse. How? Because previously he got practiced looking at that verse. So once he opened the scroll, his eyes fell on that same verse which he was meditating. The Spirit of 26:38 the Lord was upon me and he anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor to heal the broken-hearted, to deliver those who are imprisoned to give sight. He wrote everything. He read everything. So, that was the practice of Jesus. And 26:56 in Hebrews, the Hebrew author is recording it. It is written about me in the scroll. And he quotes a verse from Psalms. He quotes a verse from Psalms. And there it is written Psalm 40 27:18 and verse six. Psalms 40 and verse six. So, there we read sacrifice and meal offering you have not desired. 27:37 My ears you have opened. But offering and sin offering you have not required. Then I said, seventh verse, behold I come in the scroll of the book it is written of me. I delight to do your will, oh my God. Your law is within my 27:51 heart. So, in Hebrews, he says, my entire body I is to do your will. And he quotes a verse from Psalm. But the Psalm, it is not the entire body. It starts with the ear. It starts with the ear. That's what we read in the 28:11 sixth verse. My ears you have opened. >> [clears throat] >> And this has got a context in the Old Testament about the slave. Ears opened means putting a hole in the ear. Putting a hole in the ear. If a servant is working for seven years, 28:29 at the end of the seventh year, jubilee, you have to release him. And if somebody says, I really love you, I don't want to go away from you. I want to serve you till my death. I will stay here. Then such a slave, you put a hole 28:44 in the ear. And he will stay there. So, there are two kinds of slaves. Slaves without any opening in the ear, they are also slaves. Slaves of Jesus, and those who have some opening in the ear, they are also slaves of Jesus. 29:02 But, there's a difference. One permanently has committed his life. Other people, they are temporarily Let us wait for some jubilee years. Let us get get Let's try to get some good opportunity. Till then, we'll attend this church. 29:15 Till then, we'll follow this way. If some other better opportunity is there, yeah. They are not wholly committed, fully committed. Yesterday, we read a verse Second Chronicles. A verse that those whose heart hearts are perfect, 29:32 diligent. One who holds the Lord tightly. Lord, you are my everything. You are my all-in-all. A slave like that, his ears are open. He'll be able to hear his master. So, through these verses, what lesson we learn? There is a 29:50 relationship between hearing and being a servant or being a slave. So, are we able to say to God, "Speak to me, Lord. Here your servant. I'm here as a servant. I'm here as a slave." 30:08 That was Samuel's attitude. Till his death, Samuel was true to that commitment he has made when he was a very small boy. So, there may be small children here. In your sixth standard, seventh standard, you can commit like Samuel has 30:26 committed his life. Lord, speak. Your servant hears. I'm a servant, Lord. I want to be a slave, Lord. I want to be a slave whose ears are open. I don't want to be like the people of Israel who came up to the land of Canaan, they experienced all the 30:43 miracles, seen miracles, and now they are seeing the fruit from Canaan, but refused to listen. So, that helps us to go to the book of Hebrews. Book of Hebrews. Yeah, we read it 31:12 There's a difference between the Old Testament people hearing God's word and we hearing God's word. That is there in the first chapter. First two verses. Hebrews chapter 1 and first two verses, where the author is telling 31:30 about how to from whom we are listening. God after he spoke long ago to the fathers and the prophets in many portions and in many ways. He spoke through many prophets. He spoke through many ways. Like 31:49 prophet Hosea. He spoke through his life. You marry the unfaithful woman and then teach the people of Israel. People of Israel are like this unfaithful woman. So, in the different ways he spoke. 32:06 And in these last days has spoken to us in his son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the world. Such a great God through his son Jesus Christ in the last days he's speaking to us. 32:26 He's speaking to us through the Holy Spirit. Jesus speaks to through us through the Holy Spirit by convicting us through the word of God. Even when we read the word of God, when we are open in our heart, when we have the insight 32:39 and understanding, God is able to speak to us. So, it is when we are humble, comes to God like a servant, he is able to speak to us. And Philippians chapter 2, we read how Jesus was a 32:57 servant. In Hebrews also we read in Philippians we read in the second chapter, "Have this attitude in yourselves, which was also in Christ Jesus." What was that attitude? He was seventh verse, "He emptied himself, 33:15 taking the form of a bond servant, not an ordinary servant." A bond servant means he has sold himself to his master. "Till my death I will work for you, not for any wages. I will work for you." And bond servant. "And being made in the likeness of men." 33:35 So, he became like a servant for us. In Hebrews also we read in chapter 2 and verse 9, "But we see him who was made a little lower than the angels." And who are the angels? In the first chapter he says in the last verse, 33:53 "Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to render service for the sake of those who inherit the salvation?" The angels are serving spirits for human beings. Imagine in heaven, [clears throat] how they are. They are serving spirits. 34:11 They are the angels. Angels are serving us. And here, Jesus was made a little lower than the angels. See the humility Jesus took. Little lower than the angels. 34:27 I imagine like this, a big landlord. Big landlord, lot of hundreds of of acres of land. Has got lot of servants, bond servants, slaves, and so many people working, working, working. And one day he thinks, 34:45 "I want to really understand the servants' life." And he decides. Usually people don't do that, but he wears like a servant some khaki dress uh and he goes to one of the supervisors. 35:03 "Iya, please give me a job. I am hungry. My family is in need." And he asked so many questions, and he, like a servant, answers, and he joins the work. Supervisor doesn't know that he's the owner. And they all are working. 35:19 Now, what the existing servants do will do? They will try to bully him. It's called ragging in the college. Happens in the workplace also. A new person comes, do all the work to him. Now, I judge one brother I know he joined 35:37 a bank. And people didn't like this fellow writing exam and passing and coming to the bank. So, the his boss he will carry so many other cards and bank cards and he will dump on his table. Finish all the entry and then go. He will keep 35:55 on entering, entering, entering night 11:00, 10:00, 11:00 he'll go. And he developed nervous problem and became depressed and he could not go to the work. He said, "I will not go. When I think of my bank," he's shivering with 36:09 fear. Stopped going. For two one more than 1 year he didn't go. Thought he will lose the job. Which one to Which one is better to lose the health or to lose the job? We loses the health, very difficult. So, like that they will bully. And this 36:27 servant also was started working and people started beating him. And he bore all the pain. The landlord made a little lower than the angels, lower than the servants, a new servant going in. 36:46 Jesus became like that for you and me. They beat him. He became a bondservant, emptied himself to teach you and me the way of humility. And he They not only beat him. Have you ever 37:05 got a spit from somebody? Did anybody in your lifetime spat on you? No, I don't think anybody would have faced that. Imagine somebody spitting on you. What a humiliation. That too in front of big audience. They did that to Jesus. 37:24 And that was the humility recorded in Hebrews chapter 2:9. He became little lower than the angels. Just to taste death. Death for his dignity, death for his anything. And finally, the physical death also. 37:43 Before that, he experienced so many deaths. And he became little lower than the angels. And he's speaking to us. He's speaking to us in these last days. So, let us not drift away. Second chapter, first verse. 38:02 We must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it. Are we paying closer attention to what we heard and what we are hearing from God, from the Holy Spirit? Close attention. Lord, speak to me, Lord. I don't want to 38:17 take it lightly, Lord. I want to take it seriously. Small thing God may be speaking. Forgive somebody. Humble yourself. Or ask for forgiveness. Settle it. Speaking. God spoke to me when I was a young boy, God spoke to me. 38:33 I delayed it for nearly 2 years asking forgiveness because I thought what he would think of me. Such a humiliating experience for what going and asking for forgiveness to somebody who thought I'm a good person, good boy. 38:46 Struggled, struggled, struggled. But I didn't know I didn't have people to say at that time you have to immediately go and settle it. But that was not an excuse. But when God speaks to us, Lord, I'm a servant. I'm here to listen to. I'm here 39:00 to obey. I'm not here to analyze what you say. I'm not here to uh look at it in different angle like a master. No, Lord. I'm a servant. And coming back to Matthew chapter 13. Now Jesus is telling in 39:19 verse 14, Matthew chapter 13 and verse 14. In that case 39:39 the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled. When Jesus is talking about the parable of the sower, he remembers what he read in the scroll. Isaiah. Isaiah was a favorite book for Jesus because it talks about the new covenant, 39:54 starting of the new covenant from 40th chapter onwards. And he quotes from book of Isaiah. And you read from 14th to last part of 15. It talks about the prophecy. You will keep on hearing but will not understand. You will keep on seeing but 40:13 will not perceive. For the heart of these people has become dull. With their ears they scarcely hear and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they would see with their they would see with their eyes, hear with their ears, and 40:26 understand with their heart and return. So that I can heal them. It's a quote from the book of Isaiah. Where does it in the book of Isaiah? It is in the book of Isaiah chapter 6. Book of Isaiah. 40:48 He's quoting from the book book of Isaiah chapter 6 and verse 10. Isaiah chapter 6 and verse 10. Yeah. Same thing Jesus is quoting. What is the importance of book Isaiah? Why God says that in the book of Isaiah? 41:07 Isaiah chapter 6 starts with a very very important event. Very very important event. The first verse in the year of King Uzziah's death. That's a very very important event. I don't know whether it had happened in our lives. 41:27 In the year of King Uzziah's death. What is the significance of this king? We read about that in 2 Chronicles chapter 26. 2 Chronicles chapter 26. We read about this king. He became a 41:47 king when he was 16 years. Are there any young people here who are 16 years old? He was a king at that time. And he followed the Lord. 2 Chronicles chapter 26 and verse 4. 42:08 He did good in the sight of the Lord. He started well. He knew the word of God. He followed, obeyed, and he went to the temple. So many things he did. That's why it is written, fourth verse, he did right in the sight of the Lord 42:26 according to all that his father Amaziah had done. And the next verse, as long as he sought the Lord, so he's a person who sought the Lord. Many of us are seeking the Lord. He sought the Lord. And God prospered him. Might be God has 42:44 given you a good job, good salary, good house, good family, good church. Anything you touch prospers. He prospered because he sought the Lord. And God helped him seventh ways seventh verse. God helped him against the Philistines and against the Arabians who 43:01 lived in Gurbaal and Meunites. Ammonites also gave tribute to Uzziah. And what happened with the with his life? A very God-seeking life, and God prospered him, God supported him. And his fame started reaching far and 43:20 wide. That's what we read in the eighth verse. His fame extended to the border of Egypt, and he became very strong. He became very strong. And we read in the 15th verse, and he is also a man um he built a lot of forts, and he was an agriculturist. 43:40 Did a lot of things for agriculture, farmers. And 15th verse we read, he was marvelously helped until he was strong. Until word is a very dangerous word. Until. In our lives, is this word found? Until. This brother was reading Bible very 43:58 well. This brother was very submissive. He was very humble brother until. So, Lord, I don't want to face that word my life until So here him His fame spread afar for he was marvelously helped until he was strong. 44:17 Nothing wrong in becoming strong. But after becoming strong, what are we doing? And by this time, you should have become teachers, but we have to give you milk." And what is a strong food? It is for 50:08 those who practice the senses of discernment, listening to God. Is it God's voice? We should have a reverential fear. What is that fear? That I may hurt God. That is unholy fear. That is not a good fear. We should not have that fear. We should 1:34:29 not have that fear. If we have the fear that God will hurt me or punish me, it's an unholy fear. We should never have that fear. So, dear brothers Hebrews 4, lastly Verse 15 and 16 Please read. For we do not have a high 1:34:48 priest who cannot sympathize with our weakness, but one who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Therefore, let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace 1:35:04 to help in the time of need. And if I when I listen to the brothers who walked 1:39:52 before us, and that's the picture we are getting. That the Lord delivered them. And the same Lord will deliver us. I just want to give a word from Jeremiah chapter 12. Jeremiah felt to give up sometime. 1:40:11 And the Lord said, the Lord encouraged him. See, the match is not yet started. This is nets. Said, if you run with footmen and they have tired you out, then how can you compete with horses? 1:40:34 If you fall down in the land of peace, how will you do in the thickets of Jordan? As we heard from brother that the Lord trains us for battle. And I remember brother Vincent using an um a picture of a punching bag. 1:40:52 The Lord allowed the children of Israel to fight themselves so that they can become strong. So, every temptation is a battle. I believe the Lord will help us. If you have faith to get up and walk, let's just pray and commit ourselves 1:41:07 into the Lord's hand. Our gracious, loving, heavenly Father, we see how you hate sin. And give us that same hatred in our hearts that we may never pamper self, never try to justify, Lord, but we receive the word with the honest heart, 1:41:27 Lord Jesus. And come to you with a faith, come to you with a faith to be cleansed and to be overcomers in the days to come, Lord Jesus. Help us never yield to the pull down from our own flesh. Help us to see through. Give us that discernment to discern our 1:41:42 own heart, Lord Jesus. And uh help us to hear your voice. Give us that humility. Help us to recognize the weakness of our own flesh. And to be like the Lord. And to learn that lesson that we can do nothing without you, Lord Jesus.
